Which would you do with a 17-18 month old?
So I just found out that I am off Thanksgiving Day and the day after. I am very happy about this. Troy's daycare is closed these days also. DH has to work (he's off Sun/Mon).
ALL my family (except my brother-he lives in Queens) live OOS. I am considering going to my dad's house (S. Carolina) but I am not sure what I should do . . . note: my brother is already going down, and he is driving.
(A) Drive with my brother- it's an approx. 12 hour drive. My brother is leaving late Wed night- around 10pm and returning sometime on Saturday. I'm just concerned about taking Troy on a road trip this long.
(B) I've check airfare, and just for 1 person it is averaging $400 or more round trip. We do have the money, but . . .
(C) Don't go, just stay home and chill with Troy.
Note: The longest "road trip" Troy has been on was a 2 hr drive (with traffic). IF I chose this, I'd go right to Queens (to my bro's place) and put him to bed (in PNP) then when we're ready to leave transfer him to the carseat.
TIA!!

Do you want to go?
If I wanted to go I would go with the brother. It's a long trip but it's at night so Troy "should" be sleeping.
I just cannot imagine flying by myself with DS who is 16 months. Handling the bags plus him...

Yes, I want to go, since the last time I saw my dad & step mom was the end of August, and they cannot come up for a visit until Jan or Feb.
When I went last time I flew alone w/ Troy and it was borderline unbearable!

I would drive, it is not THAT bad and we drove from NC to NY during the day (we left at like 5am). I would have rather driven at night but DH thought it would be safer to drive during the day

Yes, he's done it numerous times (me too).
I just confirmed with my brother- he wants to leave around 9pm and plans on making 2 stops for gas/snacks. I too can drive (I don't sleep well in the car-I'm a belly sleeper)

Thanks. I don't mind the drive, neither does my brother. Just worried Troy won't stay asleep.

I'd say fly.
IF you decide to drive, try to go at night. That way, he's sleeping and won't bother you as much.

Yes, I would drive then. You have company, Troy can sleep most of the time in the car.

Re: Which would you do with a 17-18 month old?
Well if you can swing the airfare, I would do that. I've traveled alone with an infant and my son and did fine.
If you drive, chances are he will sleep all night. I personally can't sit in the car for that long, especially at night with someone else driving. I worry about them falling asleep so therefore I can't fall asleep. We did it once and never again!

Re: Which would you do with a 17-18 month old?
Before you jump in the car for 12 hours, I would want to know if your parents or other relatives would be willing to take care of Troy when you get there. If you and bro drive through the night, Troy will sleep and then wake up at normal time ready to play and eat and be tended to. If you and bro haven't slept all night, you won't be in a position to care for an active toddler. Just a thought...

ITA. I would lean more towards driving.
If you do decide to fly, can you give your brother your stuff so you don't need to check it?

Hmm, didnt think about the "When we get there" part. I am sure they will be more than willing to entertain him-- but to make sure, I will cal my dad tomorrow to let him know for sure we're coming and ask.
If I did fly, I certainly could have my brother pack some of my cargo if needed!

If you have the money, I'd fly. But if driving down with your brother gets you to your destination too, but costs less, then I'd do that.
Troy can handle it, I wouldn't worry about that!

After spending WAY too much time looking at airfare, we really don't have the money on hand to pay for a plane ticket.
Driving would be WAY cheaper. My brother said approx $150 in gas. We both have EZPass, so we could split that- bad but I dont count that in the cost for travel.
Really, my BIGGEST concern about driving is Troy-- DH is a jacka$$ and said "Well if you want to drive, go ahead- I just think Troy will freak out- you see how he does on the ride to/from Queens"
BTW, Troy has had a couple freak outs on "long" local drives (riverhead - Queens), but DH forgets more often then not it's b/c Troy hasn't napped or is hungry.
Ladies- I think we'll drive. I don't think flying won't be worth it
