I am going to put putting an electric fireplace in our formal living room. I wanted to see if I could get some opinions on lighting.

Thank you!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Lighting

I don't really like recessed lighting for anything other than a basement or kitchen, maybe -

I vote lamps.
Especially if the overall look of the room is 'formal' ........

What about wall scnoces ?

Re: Lighting

why not use both types of lighting if you like them?

I know for us, our family room required more than just recessed lighting (650 watts). We had to install sconces (300 watts each) to really get a good bit of lighting. We also have a table lamp as well.

I like recessed & sconces on dimmers, so you can use table lamps and adjust the other lights accordingly.

Re: Lighting

I was told by a lighting designer that you should try to "layer" lighting in a room for the best effect - lamps, overhead lighting, uplighting, undercabinet (in the kitchen), in cabinet (like a curio or china cabinet), recessed, sconces, etc. I think she said you should have three or four (can't remember which) types of lighting in a room. It's functional and decorative.

This is true. I work in the lighting industry and what you want to do is layer the lighting. Recessed is a great choice for general lighting when used properly. You need to make sure you are using the appropriate trim type. You also want to supplement your recessed lighting with accent lighting. Lamps, sconces, cove lighting, etcetera.
