I hate CSE's...
I had a CSE today where we told the parent that we didn't feel like her child was autistic and that we wanted to change him to speech-language impaired. We also said we wanted to change him to standard assessment and are considering changing him to a 12:1:1 from an 8:1:1. She FOUGHT with us and said he was autistic. Wouldn't you be EXCITED as a parent. Later on she pulled me aside to tell me that if we changed his diagnosis, she wouldn't get SSI anymore. Ugh! i was disgusted. Sorry...had to vent. It was the day from H E L L!!

This is why many parents WANT the autistic label. By LAW (NYS regs.) the kids get more services if they are autistic.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but as a fellow sp. ed. teacher that does CSE's, I don't think teachers at a CSE meeting can say whether or not a child is autistic. i would think that a doctor and psychologist would have to be the ones to give that diagnosis. Autistic kids and speech-language kids can be so similar, it can be a fine line.

That is disgusting.
I had many of the same situations last year with parents and
SSI. One parent gave them my number and told them I was
the PT
I flat out told them that she was lying about her child and
just looking for money.

I have to agree...it is sad, but true. When Christopher enters the school age level Im praying that label will go away, but some parents know they will get MORE services with a label of Autism.

I've got to ask what the proposed change in classification was based on? If you had an updated psychiatric or psychological evaluation that refuted the autism diagnosis, then it makes sense to change classification. otherwise, I think the mom has a point in not changing it at this time.

re: i hate CSE's...
Since it was his triennial, the psychologist did a full work up on the child with an IQ test (on which he scored in the average range), ADOS, autism rating scale, you name it, she did it. Based on all of these assessments and reports from myself and the speech therapist, the recommendation was made. The psychologist formalized her new diagnosis. I know they get more services with an autism label, but the child is clearly not autistic and is in an 8:1:1 that I fought to get him in since he was WAY too high for a 6:1:1. I'm recommending a type 3 for 12:1:1 community school in the spring.

Re: I hate CSE's...
Alot of the parents are really concerned about the SSI. It's horrible, but true. The school or teachers are not allowed to diagnose autism. That needs to be done by a doctor. The students can also be Autistic and still classified as Speech and Lng. Imapired. It's part of the Autisim.

I agree with the PP. You have to think of it from the parent's perspective as well. It is a hard pill to swallow to send your child from a 12:1:1 to an 8:1:1. Also, a doctor make the diagnosis official.

They would be going from 8:1:1 to 12:1:1...less restrictive!!
