As much as I dislike Walmart, I have to admit that there is room for them to manuever around this. They also must have a business reason for doing it -- alienating customers probably, because I don't think Walmart does anything that would cut into their profits.
Last I check, a store can "almost" sell and not sell what they want...
Not if the law defines this med as a commonly prescribed one, and they are refusing to abide by the law. The part of my post you didn't quote was where I said the law needs to be re-evaluated.

I don't think everyone who might need the morning after pill can necessarily get one if places like Walmart don't dispense it. What about the women without cars or internet access? What about the scared teenagers? I don't think saying just go to the hospital is the solution especially if these women are rape victims.
Unless a court judge sees otherwise... I don't think WalMart should be held financially accountable for not supplying this particular drug.

Re: The Morning After Pill
Posted by Princessmaris There is major controversy as of to whether or not the MAP is considered abortion.... To me....it does the same exact thing an abortion does, w/o the medical procedure (if indeed the woman is actually preg) which is ending the growth of a zygote/fetus (if you are taking the other pill that can be used up til 12 weeks)
It is a cocktail of high doses of birth control pills...but there are people who consider BCP's a form of abortion.

As I said several times before, just because a few abuse something, doesn't mean that it should not be available to the masses who will use it as it was intended.
Think about kids who get high on white out or cleaning products, or drunk on Nyquil. You can't pull those from the shelves. Not to mention all those who get addicted to perscription drugs, or who use ridilin or viagra as a high instead of what they were meant for.
True, but I do think there should be some regulation.
It's funny- DH and I were in Rite Aid last night because I have a cold. And now if you want to buy a lot of popular OTC meds, you have to take a little card from the display. DH told me that cold meds are used to make meth so you can't buy it in huge quantities.
A little off topic, but I can't help but worry about kids who WILL abuse this medication because they don't know better. And as someone who works with teens, I can tell you that most of them have that "invincibility" complex in a big way.

Re: The Morning After Pill
The MAP is taken within (I think) 3-5 days after intercourse. It is basically a very high dose of a birth control pill. This is taken to avoid a pregnancy, not once you are pregnant.
There is an "abortion' pill that can be taken once you are pregnant. That is different from the morning after pill.
I don't think having the MAP pill available encourage kids to have unprotected sex. To me, that argument is like saying that more kids will have sex if you give them a condom. These kids will have unprotected sex regardless. The only thing the MAP will affect is the amount of unplanned pregnancies.

but if they baby is already "made" attached and whatever it does nothing...
However it should not be used as birth control thats gross..
and unsafe. It is meant as EMERGENCY contraception, not regular. If your friends are using it as their usual form of birth control, they will end up hurting themselves.

I completely agree. The benefits outweigh the costs. There are so many things on the market that could be abused, but they're still available to the general public b/c of the benefits.

I THINK walmart is owned by a religious family...hence why you can only buy edited versions of lets say eminem there.....
This indeed would be going against the christian faith....so wouldnt they have a loop hole there??
Again, I think....

Re: The Morning After Pill
I think everyone can agree with the idea that not requiring a perscription to get this drug is a HIGHLY debated topic. Hell... I agree with the people that you shouldn't have to get a perscription to get this drug.
But since this is such a hot topic... I think a company should have the right to decide if they want to stock a highly contested drug. They should not be sued over it.
If Illinois wants to rewrite the law to list what medications are classified under "common"... then its up to WalMart at that point to follow the law or break it.

The plaintiffs aren't asking for monetary damages (except for $25 per plaintiff and attorneys fees, which is common to ask for in lawsuits).

Its much easier to take the MAP then to use a condom, or take a pill everyday.....this is exactly why I think it will increase the amount of unprotected sex people have....esp kids!

Their religious beliefs are not above the law. This will not get changed unless a court judge interprets the law.

above, a poster shared her story of taking the MAP. Her experience is not one I'd like to go through ever! I doubt anyone would chose that over a condom, or a birth control pill.

You realize they're being sued for a total of $75 plus the cost of the plaintiff's attorneys, right?
I read and reread it because at first when I saw "25" my brain interpreted "25 MILLION"
They're only suing for 25 DOLLARS each...
Assuming that I'm the only dope who read it wrong the first time and your point was just that they should be law-suit proof, I have to disagree there. What if they decided that they didn't want to sell cholesterol meds because they think people should just exercise more often? Would it still be okay to say "they should not be sued over it?"

You make a valid point. I guess corporations in respect to PR have to pick their battles carefully.
Maybe their "catholic" beliefs have something to do with this particular action. Who knows.

You can't ignore the law b/c of religious beliefs. If you break the law, you're subject to the consequences, regardless of your beliefs.

Re: The Morning After Pill
Suing is one way to get the law changed ... I think they are doing the right thing by suing instead of waiting for our politicans to change the law. In this kind of case Walmart is just an example to get to the higher courts. And because Walmart is so big, it's getting even more attention then say "joe's local pharmacy" would.

Re: The Morning After Pill
WalMart is already in enough trouble as it is in respect to "their image". They can't really win in this scenario.
If they sell the drug... then you can have all the pro-life and mothers associations out there blaming walmart for making it easy for their teenage daughters to get out of being pregnant. You don't know what may happen if the situation was reversed.
It works both ways. In this case... its just best to follow the law which at this point they are doing (until a judge says otherwise).

While I agree with you about condoms.. Everyone should use them. And anyone who uses the M.A.P as birth control is an idiot. Not everyone has side effects.
