question about trusting jeweler
my e-ring needs to be fixed..the stone is loose..i can actually hear it moving around..Plus, one of the side stones needs to be moved.. I know of a jeweler in huntington near me that my mom has taken diamonds too...and she trusts them.. but has anyone had to leave their ring with a jeweler ?

Re: question about trusting jeweler
I'm so nervous about doing this too.
I have antique diamond earrings left to me by my grandmother that I want made into a ring. I haven't done it yet just for that reason...

Re: question about trusting jeweler
Any reputable jeweler will prefer you to stay with your ring while it is fixed. I have had terrific experiences with Bunty's on Commack Road. I had my stone tightened and it was never take out of my sight.

If it's Freedman jewelers - he used to be an the board of the AGS. I would definitely trust him. He's also been the expert on Dateline when they're doing shows about scamming stones in the diamond district.

Re: question about trusting jeweler
You have two choices....
1. Stay there while they fix your ring in person
or
2. Go to the Jewelry Judge in Garden City. Pay for an appraisal. They will document your stone and all the imperfections on it. Get the ring fixed. When you get the ring back... bring it back to Jewelry Judge for a follow-up. They will DEFINITELY know if the stone was swaped out or not. They said they have actually gone to court for clients and have won practically every time. You can't fool these people.

I actually had a HORRIBLE experience with this jeweller and reported them to the BBB. Total shady thing they tried to pull on us when purchasing my wedding band.

I think all jewelers are shady. I wouldn't trust anybody.
Thats why I like dealing with the Jewelery Judge. Since they don't sell any jewelery and are strictly in the appraial business... they give a totally unbiased service.
I would totally trust them to recognize a swapped out diamond.
Just keep in mind appraisals are not cheap. I think an initial e-ring appraisal is $100 buks... and a followup is something like $20-30.

They should have full documentation on your stone then. Call them and mention the repair and ask them how much a followup would cost to identify a swapped stone.

Re: question about trusting jeweler
It should take no more than 30 minutes to tighten up a stone.
This should be done IN YOUR PRESENCE.
Do you have a princess, marquis, pear, or any other shape with points/corners? This is more difficult to tighten, and you run the risk of chipping a corner. Jewelers have insurance for this reason. I would go the the place your mother suggested, but make sure the work is done right in front of you. Make some phone calls - sometimes the jeweler will prefer an appt for a repair like this.

Re: question about trusting jeweler
If you have a GIA certified diamond, or have had a map of the inclusions made, you should also mention it.

Re: question about trusting jeweler
i have a princess cut diamond...but in addition to getting that tightened, i need to get one of my side stones moved over...Its kinda hard to explain..i have an emerald cut diamond on each side of the center stone, but one is pushed in too far...so i need to have that adjusted as well.

Re: question about trusting jeweler
I'm sorry, but I would definitely take it back to where it was purchased. Maybe over the weekend?
And definitely don't wear it til it's tightened!!!

We bought our wedding bands from Elsa's in farmingdale. Your ring never leaves your site! They do all repairs in front of you!

Re: question about trusting jeweler
I brought my ring back to the jeweler in the city I got it from when one of my side stones was really loose. She had to rebuild my setting to get it in there right, so I had to leave it with her for a few days. I didn't trust anyone else with it.

My jeweler's policy is to have his customers stay there when they are working on e-ring.

My FIL is a jewler and is NOT shady! Not all jewlers are out to get you. You need to feel comfortable with the person you are dealing with. My FIL's store is a mom and pop store and he has said that is is really hard for a smaller business to "scam" your diamond since they would have to have basically the exact size and shape laying around in a lesser quality to get you. Larger stores that carry a lot of stones have more of an opportunity. My FIL will show you your stone through the loop before he takes it back to fix and then again when he returns- showing you any imperfections or any characteristics that will make distinguish your stone from one that has been switched out.

Re: question about trusting jeweler
When I lost a diamond from my wedding band I wouldn't think of taking it anywhere but to the jeweler that made my ring.....Elsa's although I did have to leave it there to be done. I also previosly had it appraised by the Jewelry Judge.
