Has anyone ever donated their car for charity?
If so - where did you donate your car, what type of condition does it have to be in, and what kind of tax break did you get for the donation?
TIA!

We donated it to some children's organization in the past. The write-off used to be great.
Now it sucks.
We just sold my car a few weeks ago to a cop who asked if we were selling it.

Ditto on all accounts, well not the sold the car to the cop part
DH donated a car in 2002 and he called the organization and they came and got the car on a tow truck and gave us a lot of paperwork.

We sold the car for $100 to the cop & it was worth it for us.
In the past, they used to give you a blue book value deduction. Now they depreciate it down to diddly.

we're still waiting on the paperwork for how much it was for....
but make sure you go DIRECTLY to the charity - not through a third party vendor....
we donated ours to the diabetes foundation.

They changed the laws a few years ago, you used to be able to write off Blue Book value. Now you can only write off what the charity got for the car when they resold it or sell it for scrap or whatever. You are usually better off selling it yourself.

Yes we did but it was a few years ago and it was to the temple, and we also donated the "tax break" money to the temple as well. I agree, if you are going to donate go straight to the source.

I donated one of my car a few years ago and you were able to use the value of the Kelly blue book.
Not anymore. Now it's only worth whatever they sell it for at an auction or for parts. You can no longer use the market value for the tax break. There is a lot more paperwork.

Re: Has anyone ever donated their car for charity?
i donated 2 cars both to Heritage for the Blind they gave me blue book value - does not matter what condition the car is in
I got a $5000 write off on the first one and it was a 7 year old Nissan Sentra that I had paid 13000 for brand new and had over 100K miles on it

Re: Has anyone ever donated their car for charity?
Yes, twice to Long Island Cares. They come pick it up. So easy and it goes directly to a good cause.
ETA: The cars were not in moving condition (broken steering, etc.) and I am not sure about the taxes, we just did it so I don't know what my accountant will take off.
