13mo DS went for routine blood work today and it was a failure
I went to Quest in the Hungtington Medical group and unfortunately it was a waste. It started out with one person attempting to draw while I held him down. He couldn't see the vein in the left arm but was able to feel. The guy tried three times and couldn't get anything. DS was screaming his head off of course and turning bright red and was HOT. As soon as he removed the needle he was calming down. We waited about 5 minutes and then someoen else came in to help. They tried his right arm and got nothing.
I couldn't tell if they were inexperiened in drawing blood from a baby or that it was just hard finding the vein (obviously) but I felt so bad hearing him go through all that for nothing.
I actually want to put this blood work off for a bit. It's routine bloodwork to check for anemia etc... at around a year old. I just feel really horrible about it. I even called Huntington Hospital to see if I could go there.
How did your DC do with their first routine bloodwork. How old was DC and did it work on the first try?

They found the vein and could "feel" it but it took at least 3 or 4 tries to get it in. I saw them moving the needle under his skin. He was screaming. It was so traumatic I told DH if we need to do it again he has to take him.

I went to Quest in W. Babylon & it was a nightmare too. I had to hold her down & she was screaming & they needed 2 people & they finally got it after about 10 minutes, only 1 try, but she was not happy.

Did you ask them to use a "butterfly baby" needle? I had to ask the phlebotemist to get one for DS. Had I not asked them to use one, they would have used a child or adult needle which is to big for a baby's small veins. I had to wait an hour while someone went to the hospital across the street to get one for DS but it was worth the wait because they were able to get it the first time they tried.

Our pediatrician does the finger prick to get blood for that thank GOD. Otherwise I probably wouldn't go!

No I didn't and by the look of that needle they used I'm sure it was for adults. I thought to myself it looked kind of big but I didn't say anything
You would think as professionals they would use what is right for the particular patient and that you don't have to ask. I'm upset now that I didn't ask. I'm a first time mommy so I'm learning as I go here.
I have to say the two people at Quest were very nice to my son and I. I didn't feel rushed and they did try it was just a shame we got nothing. I know I don't want to go back and I'm not the one that got pricked 6 times.
That's why I called Huntington Hospital. Someone told me I can get someone who draws blood from the nursery draw blood on my son. I figured they are probably good with finding really tiny veins.

I'm going to ask about that
I said to the two people at Quest wouldn't it be easier to draw blood from the fingers or heel of the foot or something other than putting that tight rubbery thing around the arm and having two people hold down a child. It's so scary for them. I personally got hives all over my body I was so bothered by it.
I'm going to ask my pediatrician about the finger pricking. It's insane.

I would definitely call the hospital. I took DD at 13 months to SB Hospital they have a blood lab that does the NICU, nursery etc. I took DD to the lab, the man who drew her blood was very gentle and she did not even cry. I definitely agree that the finger prick would be wayyy better though!

OMG...the same thing happened w/my ds..We went to quest in huntington, it took 2 people trying to draw blood and they said his veins are not developed yet and to come back when he is 2!!! They said they dont know why he'd have to get the bloodwork done so early. I felt so awful...i still do and this was 2 months ago....i get sick thinking how upset and scared ds was and for nothing. I havent seen the ped yet but i'm going to tell him that i will not try again until he's 2.

Re: 13mo DS went for routine blood work today and it was a failure
I think my doctor forgot to give me the prescription for bloodwork at my older DD's 1 year visit. She actually had her first blood test done after 2.5--she got the prescription at 2 but I procrastinated, plus I was afraid of a situation like you described.
As for my younger DD, she did get the prescription at age 1, and she's 18 mos. now and I still haven't taken her. I don't plan on taking her until after age 2 like my older DD.
