Any NYC teachers?

If so, I have a question regarding accusations of violating rules against corporal punishment and verbal abuse.

My husband was served with a letter today stating that a student is accusing him of violating the Chancellor's Code against corporal punishment/verbal abuse. This is the first time in his 4 years of teaching that he has ever had anything like this happen. He can't even think of what, who, or when this supposed occurrence took place. He has a meeting with the principal and his union rep on Friday. We're both just frightened that he'll be placed in a rubber room or worse. This all just makes me sick to my stomach. He's the sweetest guy and would never hurt anyone.

I'm amazed at what they consider corporal punishment these days....

Did he have a kid clean his whole room, or do a repeated writing exercise, or face his desk towards a wall? I believe there are forms of these that can be considered corporal punishment.

How would a student even know this is considered corporal punishment? Do they sit around just waiting for reasons to charge teachers? (BTW: I don't think he's done either of those. The only thing he can think of is that during bus duty he may have touched a student.) What are the odds that he'll actually be punished? Will he get a chance to face his accuser? I work for lawyers, so I know that in a criminal court the accused has a right to question their accuser.

Honestly, you look at a kid cross eyed and it's corporal punishment.

Good luck to your husband! It's definitely possible that nothing will come of it.

Re: Any NYC teachers?

last year a teacher in my building tapped a kid on the head with a few sheets of loose leaf affectionately. the kid went home and told her parents that the teacher hit her. The teacher was suspended for a week (administrative in the building). she was back in the classroom the following week and the student was moved to a different classroom.

sad but true. i hope everything works out for your husband, its soo upsettig, especially when you consider all of the sacrifices teachers make because we love the kids and want help them. its really a shame.

This would break his spirit if that happened. Hopefully this will all blow over.
