**Welcome to the world~Reilly Patricia~10/06/08!**

On Sunday, October 5, 2008, I spent the day at home relaxing with my dog Leo, trying to finish up my baby shower thank you cards. I had been putting the cards off but promised myself that I would get them done that day so I wouldn’t have to worry about them anymore. I also had to pack my bag for the hospital. Even though I wasn’t due until October 28th, my husband reminded me that the baby could come at anytime so I needed to get my things together or else I would not be a happy camper at the hospital. I remember thinking that he was right, so I did all of the laundry and reluctantly put my favorite lounge pants and pajamas in a bag, along with my super comfy undies.

All day long, Leo was acting kind of weird; barking for no reason inside the house, wanting to sit on my lap at the dining room table where I was doing the thank you cards and just being overly snuggly all day. He wouldn’t leave my side, which, considering he was spoiled was not that far of a stretch for him but he was being more attached to me than ever. My husband was working a double shift in Queens. His plan was to work until 11:30pm and sleep at his parents’ house so he would be only minutes from work since he had to be back in at 7am. We live in Suffolk so it made perfect sense. When he called me from my in-laws’ house that night, I told him that Leo was acting really strange and joked that he may ‘know something.’ I told him I loved him and that I would call him at 5:45am to make sure he got up for work.

Leo and I went to bed that night shortly after getting off the phone with my husband. I let him sleep with me in the bed like we used to do before my husband and I started living together and wouldn’t let him sleep in the bed anymore. I figured he was needy all day and since I knew the baby would be here soon, I probably wouldn’t get many chances to snuggle with my dog. How soon she would be here was a shock!

At 5:30am on Monday, October 6th, I woke up and felt the need to pee. I remember thinking that it was perfect timing since I had to get up in 15 minutes to give the hubby a call to make sure he is awake. I got out of the bed and waddled to the bathroom which is located outside my bedroom door. As I was walking, I felt a little trickle. I remember thinking that I need to walk faster so I wouldn’t pee on the floor! I had a fleeting thought that maybe it was my water leaking… hmmm. I went pee and when I wiped, there was some pinkish/light red spotting on the toilet paper. At this point I started to believe that the trickle I felt was actually my water leaking!! I finished up in the bathroom and waddled back to the bed. I remember Leo snoring away under the covers, and I just laughed. I remembered what the nurse at my childbirth class said to do when you think you are leaking amniotic fluid- take off your undies, lay down as still as you can for a ½ hour and when you get up, if you have a trickle down your leg then odds are, you are leaking fluid. I got settled in bed and called my hubby. I told him what was going on and that I wasn’t sure if I was leaking or not so I was doing the ½ hour test. He started to get excited and I told him to calm down, this may not be it. I noticed that I was having period-like cramps but nothing horrible like I expected contractions to be. I told the hubs to hang tight and that I would call him in a ½ hour. The ½ hour passed and I got up. No trickle. I started to walk towards the bathroom and then it came… fluid rolling down my leg. Holy sh!t! Was this really happening? I peed again and now had redder spotting. I decided it was time to call my OB. I told my hubby what was going on. He was having coffee with his Mom and was about to call work to tell them he wasn’t coming in today. I told him I was going to call the doctor and then call him back. I reached my OB’s service and within a minute or two, my OB returned my call. I told him what was going on and he gave me the option to either go to the hospital or see him at his office hours this afternoon. I decided that we would go to the hospital. I had been having high BP and headache issues, so I didn’t want to mess around with preeclampsia developing. I told him that I had to wait for my hubby to come home from Queens so we would be at Good Sam around 8:30am. It was about 6:30am at that time.

I called the hubby back and told him to take his time but our plan was to go to the hospital to get me checked out. He said he was on his way and reminded me to make sure my bag was fully packed. I then took a shower and thanked God that I had taken the time to shave the day before. I chuckled to myself that I hadn’t shaved my entire 3rd trimester and the day before I may be in labor, I unknowingly shaved everything!! Perfect timing! I took a nice long hot shower and noticed that I still had the period-like cramps. I then fully packed my bag and got Leo out of bed. That dog loves to sleep! I went downstairs, let the dog out and started to make some oatmeal. I called the hubs to find out where he was and asked him to pick me up some Dunkin Donuts coffee. He got home around 8am with my yummy French Vanilla. I sent him upstairs to take a shower and got oatmeal ready for him too. We had breakfast together and I noticed that my cramps were a bit stronger at this point. At about 8:30am we got into my hubby’s car and made our way to Good Sam. We put on some Neil Diamond and sang the whole way to the hospital. It was a gorgeous day outside and I remember saying to the hubs, “What a beautiful day to be born!” At this point, I expected to be checked at the hospital and be sent home. My husband was sure that today was the day.

At about 9am, I was checked in and getting my IV in L&D 1 at Good Sam. My nurse was Jackie and we hit it off from the start. My husband and I are loud and pretty sarcastic so we had to get her on board with our way of being, but once my husband broke her down with a few of his jokes, she seemed perfectly comfortable with us! My OB came in to check me at about 9:30am and I was told that I was 2cm, 80% effaced, with contractions coming about 6 minutes apart and that my water was leaking. I distinctly remember him saying to me, “We’re having a baby today!” OMG! It was really happening… and 3 weeks and 1 day early at that!! I was given antibiotics to stop an infection from happening due to my water leaking and declined the epidural. I really wanted to try and do this without pain meds and since the contractions weren’t so bad I figured I’d try to wait it out.

At 1pm I was checked again and was 5cm with contractions about 2 minutes apart. At this point I was in a lot of pain. Good Sam allows visitors in the L&D room so we had a circus going on! My stepmom, sister, MIL, FIL, SIL and husband were all there. Needless to say, I was cranky as hell but my family was having a grand ol’ time! I decided to go for the epidural so I could relax and enjoy my first birth experience. The family was helping my husband and I come up with a name for our soon to be born daughter since we still hadn’t come up with a name yet! The anesthesiologist came in and gave me my epidural. It took him two tries but he finally did it. After that, I was a happy camper! I continued to text message my friends from my hospital bed, which they all thought was hysterical!

At about 2:30pm my doctor ordered Pitocin. I was not happy about this and objected. I have read horror stories about it making labor more prolonged and I did not want it. My nurse explained to me that my contractions started to slow down to over 6 minutes apart and that it was not good for the baby for my labor to slow down. I adore my OB [a solo practitioner] and knew he was always looking out for what was best, so I stopped biitching and got the drug.

At about 4pm my epidural started wearing off. I was given another bolus by the anesthesiologist. At 5pm I was taken off the Pitocin and told my nurse that I was having pain again and a lot of pressure. She checked me and found that I was 9cm and almost 100% effaced!! Holy sh!t!! It was almost show time! My epidural was wearing off again so I asked for more. She called my OB who was doing office hours and told him what the deal was. He gave the ok for more pain meds and said he would be there soon.

At 6pm I told my nurse that I was gonna have to push soon and where the hell was my OB! She called him again and he said he was on his way in a few. She didn’t check me again but since I felt like I was gonna poop the bed; I figured I was 10cm then. At 6:45pm my OB was getting suited up. He couldn’t believe how fast I was laboring considering I was a first time Mommy. I was so bummed out when my nurse Jackie had to end her shift!! She was a godsend all day and wasn’t allowed to stay! Since it was my first baby, we didn’t know how long I’d be pushing so she had to go. At 7pm I started to push. It hurt like a mother since my epidural wore off again. I could feel everything!! My husband was a friggin’ awesome coach and counted to 10 for me with every push! In between pushes I puked a few times too which was lovely. Time was really flying by and before I knew it, I was feeling that infamous ‘ring of fire,’ that we all hear about. I knew at that moment I had another push or two and my precious baby girl would be out. I was right! One more push and it was done! At 7:39pm, Reilly Patricia was born! She weighed 6lbs. 6oz. and was 18.5 inches long. I heard her cry and was so relieved.

What happened next was an absolute nightmare!! As Reilly was getting cleaned up and suctioned out, my OB and his intern were trying to deliver my placenta. Apparently, it didn’t want to let go of me. Of course, since I had just delivered a baby, I didn’t think it was going to be that bad. I mean, how horrible could it be really? Ha! I was about to find out. My OB and the other doc spent an hour trying to get my placenta to deliver and it came to the point that he would have had to bring me to the OR to remove it!! Craziness!! They tried pushing on my stomach, giving me Pitocin and having me push it out- nothing was working. My OB kept telling me that he is shocked that this was happening since I didn’t have any other issues with my uterus or placenta throughout my pregnancy. I remember him telling the nurse to give me Demerol and I recall thinking, “Why is he giving me that?” Then he told me that he is going to have to go in and basically ‘take’ my placenta out. Uhhh… okay. Next thing I know, my OB has his entire arm inside of me, pulling at my placenta, trying his best to rip it out. I thought I was going to pass the fucck out!! After a few minutes of tugging, the placenta finally succumbed and out it came. I would have to closely monitor my bleeding, I was told. If the bleeding was severe, I would have to go for a D&C the following day. Luckily, I did not need to undergo that procedure.

Later on that night, after being wheeled to my room, my husband went to get our beautiful daughter from the nursery. It was then he was told that she had to be transferred to the NICU due to difficulty breathing and for fluid in her lungs. Since I didn’t get a chance to hold my DD right after delivery due to the placenta nightmare, I immediately started to cry knowing that I would have to wait to hold my daughter. Luckily, when I went to the NICU after midnight on October 7th, thru my sobs I convinced Reilly’s nurse to let me hold her for a few minutes. It was then that I held my little miracle in my arms. I kissed her and whispered in her ear, “Mommy’s here. I love you baby girl. I will protect you always.” Eight very long days later, we were able to bring her home. I can easily say that having my daughter is the greatest accomplishment that I have ever done in my life.

Welcome to the world Reilly!
