why is he sooo cranky????

Chat Icon

ugh. he just hasn't been himself today. he DOES have an eye infection (he's been on eyedrops since monday)... but it doesn't really make too much sense. he was cranky on monday (eye infection?), felt better on tues, and is cranky again today.

could it be his vaccinations (last thurs)? ugh. I'm delaying most vaccinations until he's 2, but am giving him the most 'crutial ones' (the ones he actually could likely catch living in the US.... the 2 bacterial meningitis, pertussis....) so he had a whoppin' 3 shots last thurs. I really hope he's not having a reaction to them (I had a life threatening reaction to the mmr vaccine when I was 2... so I'm scared of giving him shots so early)

He refuses to sleep in his crib, he cries hysterically for no reason (he's fed and clean/dry), and he keeps wedging his fist in his mouth. He couldn't be teething???! He's only 11 weeks!

any ideas?

Re: why is he sooo cranky????

I wouldn't think it's the shots since they were last Thurs. DD only really has a reaction (extra sleepy, slightly elevated fever) the day of shots. I wouldn't think it's teething at that age either...some kids just stick their hands in their mouths a lot. DD had an eye infection (clogged/infected tear duct) at about 6 weeks old- it never made her cranky, it just kept crusting her eye to the point where it was shut.

Could be gas, overtired, or nothing at all. If it continues maybe look into it, but if it's just one day and no other symptoms it will pass.

Good luck!

ETA: Have you tried the Happiest Baby on the Block technique? I found it very helpful. Also, try turning on the vacuum to see if the sound soothes DC. When DD was very little that noise was the only thing to calm her down. We made a CD of it to put her to sleep in her room.

Although it IS early, it could be teething (although most babies stick their fists in their mouths just to stick their fists in their mouths). Could it possibly be an ear infection - I know it hurts for a lot of kids to lay down flat when their ears hurt.

He could be getting a cold...My DD is only 4.5 months and she has had two colds already - and the day before any symptoms arrived she was a complete crank both times...

Hope you find some peace soon!

Its so hard to read babies! Like OP said it could be gas, try knee to chest. It could be teething too.. motrin?
If there is no fever then there is no infection or reaction to shots (he would have had fever day of shot).
Try above or even a bath... that will relax him, read snuggle...

hmmmm, maybe it is an ear infection. he just went to the dr on monday (and he looked in the ears) but who knows what can brew between now and then... EXCEPT... come to think of it, he can sleep flat on my lap... just not in the crib. the eye is still crusting a bit... not as bad as monday but it is still there.

It could conceivably be teething? I don't know.... he is growing at a rockets pace... he has almost outgrown his 6 mo clothes Chat Icon but he's so young.......

knee to chest? that helps them fart? good to know! maybe mommy ate too much hungarian food (lots of peppers and some spice) for him? Chat Icon

he had a mild fever on monday (99.4)... haven't checked before or since..... I hate this... I just want him to be comfy and be able to sleep!

Yup, Fart. lay him flat on his back grab ankles and bend knees up to chest to force out any gas...he will like the interaction too...did you try bath yet?

hi, my daughter judt had a really bad eye infection.. if u r nursing use breast milk. just a few drops after cleaning his eye with chamomile tea. it was better within 2 hrs and almost completely healed within 3 days.

yes i did the same thing when my ds tear ducts were not developed and he always had gook (sp?) in them. it worked like a charm. what worked for my ds tonight, was singing for an hour and rubbing his back....lets hope

Re: why is he sooo cranky????

you are describing my DS to a T! he was like that for about a week. i have no idea what it was - maybe a growth spurt, maybe gas, maybe teething. he was cramming his fist in his mouth and arching his back, and he was whiny and fidgety all day long. it went away yesterday thank goodness!!

i am just chalking it up to a growth spurt, i have read that they can get fussy when that happens. i am sorry i don't have any advice but i am willing to bet it will get better soon!

Re: why is he sooo cranky????

I know there's another spurt at about 3 months (he's 11 weeks)... so it COULD be it.. but darn it, he's growing so fast w/o a spurt... he went to the dr on thurs (13 lbs 5 oz) and the following monday (14 lbs 1 oz) Chat Icon If he spurts any more, we'll be in 9 mo clothes Chat Icon

trust me i know what you mean - DS just turned 3 months on the 5th and he is wearing all 6 month clothes already (from all clothing makers, not just carter's which tends to be small on him)!
