if your dc has sensory issues (seeking) or is low muscle tone and has ot and/or pt what does the therapists do with them? how old are they? what do you do daily at home?

i do sooo much at home but nothing is routine except woking on a therapy ball. i want my new ot and pt to set up a sensory diet and just want to know what others do.

thanks!

I am obviously not an OT, but there are different types of sensory needs - if DC is sensory seeking, you would do something different than if he is tactile defensive or sensory avoiding.... You should talk to your OT to get specific activities....

Hi
I am an occupational therapist. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask or FM me. I would be happy to help.

I would definitely have your OT set up a sensory diet specific to your DC's needs. I am sure the OT will be ecstatic to see you have an interest doing things at home in addition to therapy.

Cole is Sensory Seeking ... we have him on a sensory diet and it has TREMENDOUSLY helped him. A sample day for us:
Crunchy food (dry cereal, hard pretzels, etc) in the AM
Electric toothbrush (brush teeth, gums, and use to massage outside jawline)
Brushing protocol
Active playtime (sensory street class, OT session, crawling on floor pushing toy box, etc)
trampoline or ball pit at home (we took the pack and play and filled it with about 600 balls)
after lunch: water play / shaving cream
more active play -- dancing, jumping, sit and spin
swinging in blanket or parachute
evening: dinner and drinking from tight straw cup or stage one bottle
bathtime and electric toothbrush
swaddle (we call it paco in his taco:
brushing protocol
wrap him up tightly in comforter)
Read a book and give him "blue blanket" (his favorite chenille blanket)
Phew ... lights out.

It sounds like a lot, but it becomes so routine -- and now he knows when he needs input and goes right to the ball pit or asks for a hug (deep pressure)

Where do you live? Come take a Sensory Street class with us ... its filled with activities you can replicate at home.

thank you sooooo much, that was exactly what i was looking for. the thing is we just switched ot's and she doesn't know him yet so she can't help me with a sensory diet yet.

i do a lot at home on my own since i have the background but nothing as scheduled as you.

2 30 minute workouts on a therapy ball
bean or rice table
playdoh
tent with balls
indoor swing
dancing to music
smushing with a bean bag
deep pressure
vibrating toys
massages
hug vest with weights (but i don't know how often)
(just got a trampoline but needs to be put together)
i also used to do brushing and joint compressions but he seemed to hate it so i stopped.

we go to my gym and now he's just starting ot and pt at a sensory gym. so we have him in a gym 4 days a week starting this week.

i'm in queens and i really wish i could do that sensory class but everything i looked at is out east.

also the thing is, i don't really feel like what i do with him helps much. i never see a change in his over activity or attention (which is great for some things like books or playdoh but fleeting for others like toys.) i just want to do more ya know.

You are definitely doing the right thing. I saw a huge difference in his attention when he was playing in the bathtub and in the ball pit. He learned how to answer his name and tell us how old he is while he was in the ball pit. It went like this ....

put him in the ball pit (pack and play) let him roll around
shake the thing like crazy and get his attention
then stop
ask whats your name?
*I* model "my name is Cole" while shaking the thing crazy again
stop and wait for him to request more (sign more)
repeat like 5 times
stop shaking
ask "whats your name"
Model "my name is ...."
I say "Cole!!!!" while shaking like crazy again.
Repeat leaving off the "Cole" part and not shaking until he answered "Cole"
Shake like he just one an oscar and make a HUGE deal
Stop shaking
Repeat question, only model "MY ..."
He answers "name is Cole"
Hooray!!! shake shake

repeat every day ... then vary ways question is asked to allow him to generalize

Whatever sensory activity you do, just do it with gusto like its absolutely THE most fun thing in the world.

thanks again lea. sounds like you are doing an amazing job with cole! josh recently had a HUGE word explosion at 18 months and even says 4 word sentences that he can make on his own. it is blowing my mind!
our major issues are feeding and vomitting (several times a day), balance, and just over activity/short attention span with toys, bumping and falling.

how does cole sleep? josh is such a light sleeper. his entire room is blacked out and we have a sound machine AND fan and he still wakes up if the floor or my bones creak.Chat Icon
