Twin mommies that BF

I keep being reassured that my boys are getting enough when I nurse them, but I can't help feeling like they aren't "full". They seem content after they eat, but not for long. They start to fuss a bit here and there, not really crying just fussing. They have soaking wet diapers, and nice burps, so I know they are drinking but I just can't help but wonder if it is enough.

I'm nursing them on demand so sometimes they eat for 5 mins or for 35 mins.

Does anyone have any experience or insight on this?

Thanks Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Twin mommies that BF

congratulations on your twins and for bfing!! it is no easy task in the beginning, but i promise you it def will get easier! i have been bfing my twins for 19 months and it's like nothing now.

i know it's scary in the beginning, but i am sure if you are nursing on demand they are getting what they need. try not to put too much pressure into keeping track of minutes. i remember in the hospital they wanted me to keep track of minutes and it was really stressful, instead try to make sure to look for:
that they bf 8-12 times per day
they have 6 or more wet diapers daily
3-5 or more poops daily
and are gaining weight.

we made an hourly chart to keep track of diapers and eating in the beginning. it really helped us. i will look to see if it's still on this computer and if so i can email it to you.

also, if they are falling asleep often while nursing, you may want to try breast compressions i did that all the time to keep the milk flowing more.

have you gone to a lactation consultant or a la leche league meeting? i really recommend both. they helped me feel more secure in my ability to feed both babies solely with breast milk.

hth!! please feel free to fm me with any questions. keep up the good work!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Twin mommies that BF

This was a big issuie for me especially since mine were preemies and in NICU-where I felt they were not big proponents of bf'ing-they just want everything measurable. I have ended up mostly pumping and only nursing about once a day-more for their comfort. It was just too stressful for me to worry about how much they were eating. However your boys look GREAT. And like halisa said-look for the signs that they are eating enough. I hope to start phasing in some more bf'ing once my boys double their birth weight. You are doing a great job!
