Looking for Playmates for My Son ...

My son, Gregory, is 8 and is multiply- disabled. At first glance, he appears like any other child. He is small for his age (40 lbs). He has a very severe seizure disorder. His grand mals are controlled, but he has hundreds of 1-5 second seizures (myoclonic, atonic, absence) daily. He has little to no language (some word approximations), but he seems to understand everything that is said to him. He has some ASL skills and can communicate his needs appropriately. He has a swallowing disorder and can drool a lot at times. He has ataxia ... which when his seizure level is high ... can cause him to fall frequently. Normally, he just walks with an unsteady gait. He cannot run, jump or play like "normal" children can, but he gets around pretty good. He is a gentle, loving, affectionate child who loves other children. However, we are not finding other friends easily because of his seizures and lack of school placement. He is currently taught at home with home and center based therapy programs.

I would like to have him make some friends. I don't mind going to the park or having playdates at my home. We don't have a big fancy house, but it is comfortable and very child friendly and we love company. Also, filled with plenty of toys and games. (We live in Lake Ronkonkoma.)

Gregory will play with children of any age, however, his understanding level is that of a 4-5 year old. He is unable to do what most 8 year olds can do ... video games, etc.

If anyone is interested in getting a playgroup together and getting to know Gregory and I, please respond or FM me directly.

Thanks so much.

BarbaraAnn

P.S. - I should have added that we've had many friends over the years with autism, MS, CP, etc so we've been around all kinds of children and had plenty of experiences. We love all kids and there is very little that would "shock" us. So, please don't let those concerns stop anyone from responding.

Hi Barb --

We'd LOVE to play with you! Cole is going to be 4 next month, but relates best with babies and also with our non-verbal friends from Nassau Suffolk Autism society. Sending you a FM with our info.

My children are a little younger, 2 y/o and 8 months old but we love playdates! I go to the park with a couple of other mommies from the boards and we always welcome new people.
