Mat clothes - that in between stage!

So, I'm getting to the point where my pants are getting uncomfortable. I'm probably going to get a belly band thing-y, but I've heard mixed things about them.

My problem at the moment is that my pants are too tight and my shirts are not long enough to disguise the fact that my pants are too tight! Chat Icon But I'm very wary of wearing anything that might seem like maternity wear because we've now told a few people, especially at work. I've got a couple of empire waisted tops that aren't even maternity shirts and I feel funny even wearing them because I feel like it looks like I'm trying to LOOK pregnant. Does that make any sense? Chat Icon

So please tell me your tips for getting through this weird in between phase.

Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: Mat clothes - that in between stage!

At that stage, in my last pregnancy, I went out and bought some new clothes in a larger size, but not maternity. I was able to wear them until I was about 25 weeks or so.

And, that way, I had clothes to transition back into after I gave birth, and wasn't yet at my pre-pregnancy weight.

This time around, about a year ago I lost about 25lbs, so I have a lot of clothes in a size or two larger, so I'm just wearing most of those until I make the leap full-time to maternity clothes!

Re: Mat clothes - that in between stage!

Not sure if I have any tips, but I feel your pain. I hated that "in-between" phase. You don't look prego, but yet your hips and stomach seem to be getting bigger. If you have any long tops that would help or some thick sweaters. It is winter so you can get away with it. I got some long, heavy sweaters at NY & Co since they always have the sales and I didn't want to spend a fortune on new clothes yet. Wanted to save it for nice maternity clothes then I hope I'll be back to my size after the baby. No point in going a size up in pants... I only did tops.

You also may want to try a hairband to close your pants. I did that for a while and liked it better than the bella band.

Also, you should check out the pants at Gap and Old Navy. There are no panel maternity pants that look JUST like normal pants, but have an adjustable waistband. They are very deceiving Chat Icon

thanks! Chat Icon I just came out on Friday! Chat Icon

So someone mentioned Ann Taylor Loft on another thread and I just went on the website. They have tons of stuff in the clearance section for $4.88 each piece and then an additional 25% off. I just tried to buy a bunch of things, but each item that I wanted said that it wasn't available anymore Chat Icon If anyone wants to take a look, it's all well hidden on the last three pages of the clearance section.

I hate this in between stage too!

It looks like I got fatter, but I don't have a big huge bump yet....I have one pair of jeans that still fit, but I bought a pair of maternity jeans, but haven't worn them yet...

I may buy some empire waist tops (mat ones) so they'll be longer to cover up

my baby is due in july so i hope they have some nice summer mat clothes...meaning comfy!!!

Re: Mat clothes - that in between stage!

I am 8w4d and I am starting to feel a bit consious of my belly, and completely understand what you are saying about the not trying to look pregnant....

I've tried the long blousy, but with a thick band at the bottom style top.... Charlotte Russe and Mandees had a few... cute with jeans - you can wear the band low enough and the blousy-ness seems to camoflauge any attention to the belly....

I'm 18 weeks, but still in regular clothes. I'm in pants 1 size larger than I usually wear, and I've been wearing lots of long sweaters and cardigans that are thick enough to hide the small belly I have. Any tight-fitting shirts really reveal the bump!

I just got some from Old Navy and love them!! I will start wearing as soon as I get them hemmed!! I'm looking at getting jeans in the "real waist" too.

I also bought three pairs of the exact same ELASTIC waist pants from NY&CO this weekend and figure they will hold me over for a while.

I was going to try the bella band but between the mixed reviews and not having many shirts/sweaters that are long enough to cover, I've passed for now.

The NY&Co website is all out of most sizes, so I sent my mom to Smithaven mall and they had none left! Chat Icon

And according to my friend's husband who works for Ann Taylor, they've closed the maternity department completely Chat Icon

Plus, no Old Navy in the UK Chat Icon Chat Icon

Think I might try H&M - and there's a place here that does the pants with the adjustable waistband.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Mat clothes - that in between stage!

I am only 7w4d & the majority of my work pants are fitting but they are getting uncomfortable. Lately I have been using a rubberband to hold the button closed which gives me a couple more inches. I do have 2 pairs of maternity jeans & 1 work pair & I am constantly in the jeans.

For me, I am sitting the majority of the day & need to be comfy or else I am not productive. I told my DH that I will have to go out this weekend & find some clothes & I do find that JCPenney does have a lot of pants with the waistline that really doesn't look like maternity....

Maybe have your mom check Target? I got a few pairs of pants there, and they have a maybe 3-inch wide elastic waistband, but it's comfortable and hidden by most of my shirts.

That's a good idea, Beth, thanks. I forgot about Target. Poor mom having to run around shopping for me! Chat Icon But, you know, I think she loves it! Chat Icon

Re: Mat clothes - that in between stage!

I bought all my maternity pants when I was in that in between phase. I had put on a few inches. Now that I am in the 3rd trimester, the pants I originally bought are beginning to feel tight.

Word of advice - if you buy maternity pants, make sure you have room to grow into them. This is probably obvious to most people but it wasn't for me. Now I have to buy a new round of pants in my 3rd trimester.

I'm sure she loves shopping for you! Chat Icon The Target in Setauket has a relatively large section, and the Gap outlet in Riverhead has some things if she's out that way (there's another maternity store there, but I didn't like their stuff as much). If she's on the South Shore at all, the Old Navy in Bay Shore has a maternity section.

The problem is that a lot of the maternity stuff just doesn't fit me *right.* I had to try on a bunch of pants to find some that looked decent. Tops are a bit easier.
