Looking ahead to transitioning out of EI

Just trying to get a head start on exploring our options. Does anyone have feedback on any of the following county approved sped pre-school programs?

I'm really looking for an integrated/inclusion type program. Jack is the type of kid that if surrounded by others doing a bit more than him, he'll step up to the challenge, but if he's surrounded by kids with a lower skill set, he'd just maintain, kwim

Are they available for full-day?

Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm in western Nassau so that's probably why you're not familiar with these programs. Lindy is a good 45mins from here. I doubt they'd bus him that far....hopefully someone here can recommend a similar place out this wayChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Looking ahead to transitioning out of EI

My ds started ACDS in September. With the exception of a few problems transitioning all is well. He has been learning a lot and is in a class of 14: 1: 2. He receives his speech services there two / three times a week. I know this school initially was for mainly kids with down syndrome, but not anymore. They have a variety of children who attend. They have also updated the building and it looks much nicer then it did a few years back. The director is awesome.

My district actually sent us to two other schools and when we went to look at them I didn't feel they were a good fit. We looked at Little Village where my ds's s/t worked, but they didn't have an approiate class for my son. We also looked at Dutch Lane in Hicksville, but we weren't crazy about their program either. I called the school on my own and asked about their program after hearing great things from my ds's former s/t. I requested the school send his paperwork there and it worked out to be a good fit. Feel free to fm me if I can help in any other way. HTH.

ok, my son went to little village for EI preschool. he did not get a spot for CPSE though. they have a few full day classes, but none of them are integrated. they have several half day, and one of them is integrated with the toddler time classes. the program is good. facilities are the best you will find out there. getting in, is very very hard though. you need to get on the waiting list for it, and keep bothering them, if you are really serious about getting in there. depending on the type of class your child needs, it may or may not be the best choice.

(what type of delays does he have? i can probably give better answers knowing what he will need.)

Variety is typically for kids diagnosed with PDD-NOS. and if you don't have a PDD diagnosis right now, they might not even talk to you. we had that when we were calling. my son never had a formal label, other than significan speech delay. my friends son went there for 2 years and she liked it though. i'm not sure if they have integrated though.

Barbara Wilson, otherwise known as north shore... good school. mostly full day, with a couple of half day classes. no integration though since they do not share space with a typical preschool. facilities are definitely on the upper end, but not at the level of little village. (when i was looking for CPSE initially, Little village was my first choice, North shore second) north shore takes kids with all sorts of different problems although they tend to specialize in kids with apraxia... so heavy on the speech delays, not as much with Adhd, or PDD.

ACDS specializes in kids with down syndrome. but they do take other kids as well. again, i don't remember if they have an integrated class. they might. place is OLD.... the first time i saw the place, i hated it. mainly because it looks like a very old elementary school that is sorely in need of a paint job. but, i did speak with one mom (ran into her when i was looking at schools at a local play gym) and she raved about the place. said the teachers were very caring, nurturing etc... and they did seem to be when i saw the school. i did hear after that (this goes back 3.5 years now)

if you really want full day class. (we did and we hunted for it) Boces in levittown.. Early childhood center is a good option. they focus mainly on the speech delays and some adhd kids... they take PDD, but its not their primary focus. their classes are collaborative, which means 2 full classes in one room, for every classroom. so a 10-1-2 class actually is 20-2-4. and 2 teachers , lotsof assistants, and tons of kids. my son went here for CPSE, and i will say, they were great. older building, but well kept. better looking than ACDS was. teachers were great, and the big class actually was an advantage since we needed to work heavily on social skills and this gave him plenty of kids to model from. also they do have integrated classes with the island trees preschool program which is housed in the same building.

if you are looking mainly for speech delays, and your son is very very high functioning there is also dutch lane in hicksville. they only have half day though. (which is why we never considered them, i wanted ful lday and was approved for it)

there is also SLCD in glen cove, which i looked at, but never considered heavily due to distance. same goes for marcus avenue in new hyde park...

FM me if you have any more questions, hopefully this gives you a good starting point.

Re: Looking ahead to transitioning out of EI

I have heard good things about variety. As for ICCD I would stay away from the Rego Park location. The one in Bayside has all different classrooms, their Autism classes do not follow ABA teaching methods. They have integrated classes as well as higher functioning self contained classes 12:1:2.

My son goes to Variety (for the past 2 years) and it has been wonderful. If you have any questions, please feel free to FM.
