Any other subs or unemployed teachers out there with their INITIAL certification?

What are you doing for your 175 hours of "professional development" in order to get to our "professional certificate"???? I have been certified now for 2 years and am still subbing and I'm worried about losing my certificate. Anyone else?

Although I am not a sub, here is what I have been told by my district:

My district says you do not need the 175 hours until you have received your professional certification. So at year four, I will apply for my professional certification and once I have received it only then will I be required to keep track of the hours.

Here is info from the highered website:

If you are not employed in a public school….

You must complete professional development every five years. However, the hourly obligation of 175 hours every 5 years is reduced by 10% for every year of your professional development period during which you are not employed in a public school. Example: If you teach in a nonpublic school for 2 years out of your professional development period, you must complete a total of 140 hours of professional development in that period (.20 x 175= 35 hours; 175 minus 35 = 140 hours). NOTE: This calculation is done automatically and is displayed on your individual professional development record. This maintains the validity of the Professional certificate and allows you to continue to teach. The first professional development period begins on July 1 following the effective date of the certificate.

Allowable Activities:
If you are not employed in a public school….

You initiate your own professional development activities; however any professional activity you complete must be in the content or pedagogy of your certificate title in order to accrue towards your continuing professional development obligation.

Yes...you cannot keep track of your hours until you apply for provisional certification. If you have your intital the hours do not count until you have your master's and thus apply to the state.

So the requirements include 3 years of teaching experience plus one year mentored. I am a sub. I have been certified 2 years already. What does this mean for me? I just don't get it. I also already have my masters and wouldn't everyone have already completed the workshops and things they list as requirements? Sorry if I am being stupid, I am just finding the information on the website confusing.

I received my initial certification in September 2006. It expires in Sept 2011. I too have my Masters and my school district said I am not required to keep track of professional development hours until 2011 when I get my professional certification.

As I understand, it's 3 years of teaching experience and 1 year of being mentored that's required for Professional certification. Then to maintain that you need professional development.

PD hours don't kick in until you get your professional cert.

OK, I see.

So what if you are only a per diem sub? I am leave replacement now but after this I will be back to a sub. I wouldn't consider anything mentored either.
