Its really crazy...
when you think about all the "activity gear" babies have. Bassinets...Pack and Plays....all vibrating and musical of course...bouncer seats.....infant to toddler rockers.....travel swings....regular swings....activity mats.....the list goes on and on...I cannot imagine that my babies could ever get bored.....or at least not have somewhere to sit LOL......I remember when my cousins had babies and they had a playpen...a highchair and a swing...THATS IT!

funny part is you buy all this stuff.. and the baby enjoys the box more than the item. 
I think its us thinking we need all this stuff to make our baby happy, forgetting its the little things that make them happy.

Like everything else, having babies is a multi-billion dollar business and new parents are a vulnerable audience to capitalize on. I think there is a lot you don't need-- but, there is also a lot of new good stuff out there.

LOL! It is totally my goal to bring back the playpen! I mean the old school big playpen! 
I've always said, after seeing my sister's and brother's kids playrooms, that all these plastic toys with hundreds of parts freaks me out with the clutter and the mess... and our kids are playing with a bucket, a stick and acorns in the fall!!!!!  Just like I did... for hours!

I think though, as much as you can try to not buy all the toys YOURSELF, other people will buy them for you! My mom used to think she needed to buy a toy for my nephew every time she saw him <and they only lived two blocks away!!!  >

HAHA remember those old playpens??? TOTALLY metal and heavy but huge and able to get a ton of use out of...My cousin put 2 kids in at a time at age 2 and there was room...now the pack and plays are stylish but SMALL!!!
