Re: yourbabycanread.com

We have it, but we only got in a couple of months ago. My DS is 13 months old. He watches the video and will do arms up, point to mouth and nose. I don't follow up with the flash cards as much (though I gave some to my day care to work with him). I like it.

I also saw this infomercial today and was interested, but it is $200. I would love to also hear other people's experience with it.

I've seen the infomercials....and I just can't get into it. I hate the idea of rushing through my child's development just so I can say "She was reading at 20 months!"
The whole concept annoys me for some reason. Let kids be kids!!!

ITA. I think these companies prey on parent's desires for their children to get ahead in life, and I don't think development should be rushed with these kits, flashcards, etc. I don't know of any reputable child development organization that endorses these products. I say spend the $200 on books or trips to children's museums, aquariums, etc.

At this age, children should be learning about the things in their environment through hands on activities, trips, reading books, etc. Sorry if I offend, but I really hate these products. They are a ripoff and not helpful for children IMO>

Re: yourbabycanread.com

I honestly get bothered by this product.

Why are people today in such a rush to get their babies to do things that will come with time?? Let them be babies! I see absolutely no point to having a 1 year old (or younger) "read". And i put that in quotes b/c it's not truly "reading" from what I understand. It's more recognition of certain words that they see over and over.

I guess I can see the intrigue..I mean it sounds pretty incredible..a 12 month old reading...but to ME, I just don't get it. Aren't we already rushing kids way too much these days??? They will all eventually read, read etc on their own time.

Totally agree with everything you've said.

Way too much pressure on little children AND their parents today. My DH and I are both very educated (and both of us are educators) and value education tremendously--I would NEVER purchase this type of a product.

i completely agree with everything you and maybebaby said.

i am a certified reading specialist and i will NOT be teaching my baby to "read." it is developmentally not appropriate. i will expose him to print and read to him, but that's it. when he's ready for letters, i'll teach him, but only when he's ready.

IMO, the idea of babies reading is ridiculous. learning to read is free--when the child is readyChat Icon

Ahhh Lori I see we are sharing a brain again!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I did get Ale English/Spanish flash cards, but for now they are fun to look at the pictures and make the animal sounds. And of course they are GREAT for throwing all over the place. Chat Icon Chat Icon Which is fine, that's what she should be doing at this age.

ITA! I watched this informercial yesterday and was pretty turned off by it actually. I didn't see anything so special that I can't do with DD on my own.

Re: yourbabycanread.com

I've seen the infomercials and had mixed thoughts. i definitely agree babies shouldn't be rushed, but if it is actually something they enjoy, that's another story. i also have some questions about learning to read through tv and have read some articles saying kids shouldn't watch tv (even for educational purposes) until 2. i am really not sure on that point. it's actually something i was going to ask my pediatrician about at DD's 2month visit on friday.
