I have a question

I have a question

I have been subbing in a district for two years. This being my second year. I have done a lot for one of the schools in the district. I have had a few short term leave replacements while here and have gone back to subbing when the teachers have come back. I am subbing in the district again and this particular school has really gotten to know me. As well as the director of the district. The principle really likes me as well as the teachers and secretaries. I am in line to get a job in the school when one opens. Things have been really slow right now with subbing in the district and I have been getting called from another district that has my name. I have accepted some assignments and was finally called one day by my other school (that I have done the leave replacements and that really likes me) to come in. I had to decline and told her I was subbing that day in another district. Do you think the district or this school will be mad if I sub in another district? I don't want to mess anything up with them but I also need to work. I feel I have my foot in the door and I don't want to take the chance of them getting mad with me when they call and I am subbing somewhere else. I have such a good relationship with them. What would you do? Any advice or comments are appreciated. I have asked a few of my friends who are teachers and they have said they should understand and not get mad. If you have read this far I thank you. Sorry it is so long I am just torn and don't want to make the wrong decision.

Re: I have a question

I don't think they'll be "mad", but it could work against you if it starts to be a consistent thing that they're calling you and you're often unavailable. Hopefully it won't go that way, because you're right, you do need to work.

Thank you. I have everyone saying that they know me and know how I am and teach and they should understand. Everyone tells me I should get my foot in the door at other districts and not rely on one. I hate this.

Re: I have a question

Not to be cynical, but I wouldn't only depend on that school. The superintendents neice could come along and there goes your job. I was a perm sub and part time teacher in a distirct and everyone loved me. I went above and beyong volunteering etc. and other people were hired and I was not. They don't have to give you a reason. Keep subbing elsewhere and make as many contacts as you could and apply all over. Sorry I hope it works out for you, but in my experience you have to keep at it as jobs are hard to find.

Re: I have a question

That is a hard one. I don't know what to say but be honest with them and explain to them that you are subbing in other districts but you would really like to be teaching here.

That is exactly what other people have said to me. What if the superintendents daughter is a teacher needs a job who do you think will get that position. I do believe that also. Everyone says they know me and like me and know how I teach and that they have to understand I am subbing in other districts. It is one thing if I am a perm. sub but I am not. This is just one school in the district as well that has gotten to know me really well so I can't really say will the district get mad at me. It is one of the schools that I do a lot for. It is so hard in this profession. Everyone keeps telling me its who you know and I don't know anyone..haha I am trying to do it on my own.

Re: I have a question

I'm a sub too, and I think they would understand since subs don't make that much money or even have consistent income from week to week. They can't expect you to only sub in their district, especially if the calls from them to work have been infrequent. I went on an interview a couple of weeks ago for a permanent sub position (still waiting to hear if I got it) and the Superintendent actually told me that if I were to get that position, that that doesn't mean that I should expect to still have the same job next school year due to budget cuts and that they would fully encourage me to continue to look for jobs in other districts for the following school year.

This happened to me, except it was a different administrator's kid. Sub in lots of different places. Not only are you spreading your name around, it's good to see how different districts operate.
