Jordana has a hearing loss

She was tested by an audiologist today. Her tone test she did great, but then she took a picture of Jordana's ears, and noted their is fluid in her ears (she thinks) causing a hearing loss.

She thinks its temporary and just from the fluid, but she doesn't know. Chat Icon So now I have to take DD to her pediatrician and then back to her audiologist once we confirm there is no fluid in her ears after another trip to the ped.

To top it all off, EI won't pay for the second hearing test and the audiologist doesn't take insurance. I'll see if the insurance will cover part of it.

I am just freaking out right now. During the tone test she was saying how great DD was doing. I thought it would be totally fine. I am just floored.

Re: Jordana has a hearing loss

I have 2 children with hearing loss - they both wear hearing aids.

I can tell you that fluid in the ears will cause a hearing loss. It's like trying to hear when you are under water. My kid's audiologist won't even bother testing them when they have fluid in their ears -- she always checks for it before she even starts testing.

I'm confident your daughter will be fine once the fluid is cleared up, Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. I went through this with my son twice last year. First in January, then in May.

The first time we were able to clear it up by using something called an Otovent. It is basically a balloon that you blow up with your nose. The Dr. rec. that my son do it up to 25 times a day.

That cleared up the fluid from March-May. Then in June, the fluid was back. The dr rec. that we can try a dose of steroids (I can not think of the name right now, but let me know if you need it) and if that did not work he would need his second set of tubes and his adenoids removed.

The steroids worked and we have not had a problem since.

I am not sure where you are located, but I have a wonderful DR. in Bergen County.

Re: Jordana has a hearing loss

I bet (and I'm no expert by any means) that it is temporary! I would think the fluid would drain eventually? I hope so! I am wondering this as well for my son, as his articulation is still a problem and I know for a while he had fluid in his ears but no ear infections.

Let us know what happens, we'll be thinking of you and hoping all goes well!!Chat Icon

Re: Jordana has a hearing loss

I've lived with a mild hearing loss since I was a child and it hasn't really impeded me in any significant way. Little issues here and there, but for the most part you would never know.

Don't freak out just yet (I know, easier said than doneChat Icon ) My brother had temporary hearing loss when he was about 2.5-3 years old because of fluid. He lost 90%Chat Icon . Ended up, loooong story short, the ears drained themselves and now he HAS 95% hearing. This was many years ago, but...something to keep in your mind. Re: Jordana has a hearing loss

I know it sounds really daunting to hear the words "hearing loss," but chances are that her hearing will be just fine. Whenever there is fluid in the ear there will be a hearing loss that is temporary until the fluid clears out. Any time there's fluid in the ear you would expect to see a loss because when there is fluid in the middle ear the sound vibrations are not transmitted efficiently. As long as there is nothing else going on once the fluid is gone her hearing will return to normal. It's really common in young children. Unfortunately, right now the audiologist can't tell you anything more than "she thinks" it's just caused by the fluid because it would be really negligent not to make sure that there's nothing else going on, kwim?. With that said, most likely it's just the fluid in her ears so try not to worry too much. Chat Icon Chat Icon I also hope you can get everything straightened out with EI and your insurance! Re: Jordana has a hearing loss

I hope it clears up soon. Is there any way that you could see an audiologist that does take your insurance? Or do none of them take insurance? That way you'd get a second opinion too. I hope everything goes ok (that you get some coverage and her hearing gets better.) Chat Icon

Hopefully its something that sounds worse than the doctor thinks. My older sister wears a hearing aid andas she gets older her hearing improved. Hopefully the fluid is not indicative of a bigger problem--dont give up hope that its just temporary.
