Resume Help: Should it be in Functional or Chronological format?

I'm completely revamping my resume in hopes of breathing some life into my job search.

I've been doing some research on various formats and the two I've found the most on are "chronological" which is a very typical format or "functional".

My resume is currently in a chronological format but I'm starting to think, especially with the economy being the way it is and the influx of resumes being received by hiring managers today, that I should change it over to a functional format.

Can anyone provide any insight on either and if there's a preference out there in regards to which way hiring managers prefer it?

My current resume is over 2 pages long and I feel that's just too long but I don't know where to cut the fat and I can't afford to have it written professionally.

Any advice, suggestions or help would be appreciated!!

I just cut mine down to 1 page and the cover letter. I dont think HR has enough time to read 2 pages. Like you said there probably are TONS of resumes per day. I def think you need to cut it down. If you were able to post some of the areas maybe one of us can figure out how to cut it down.

I think it might depend on the field in which you work, but I prefer the chronological. I like seeing the dates, because I like to see if when the person changed jobs, they made lateral moves, or took on more responsibilities in the next job. I am a linear thinker, though (and most people in my field are...) so I find reading the chronological resumes more difficult.

I don't know if you HAVE to cut it down to one page, but if it seems really wordy and there's too much info, try to trim it a bit.

I like chronological, but I've been at my job for five years, so it makes sense.

I think "Functional" formats are for people that a) have been in the same field forever or b) are searching for a totally different job but need to demonstrate that they possess the skills necessary for the position they want. KWIM?
