dosage warning on OTC drugs
does anyone NOT listen to the dosage warning on lets say, advil?
you know how they say "do not exceed 8 pills in a 24 hour period"? why is that? what will happen if i take more than recommended?
im asking b/c i got a root canal yesterday & my dentist didnt give me a Rx for pain meds... she told me to take IBprufin (sp?) so i started taking it, but i need to take 3 to make the pain subside... and it says you cant take more than 6 in a 24 hour period... so i was wondering how strict this is
TIA

Do not take more of this medication than is recommended. An overdose of ibuprofen can cause damage to your stomach or intestines. The maximum amount of ibuprofen for adults is 800 milligrams per dose or 3200 mg per day (4 maximum doses). Use only the smallest amount of ibuprofen needed to get relief from your pain, swelling, or fever. Take ibuprofen with food or milk to lessen stomach upset. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
The ibuprofen chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it.

Re: dosage warning on OTC drugs
call your dentist.
Personally I have taken more than the recommended dose and I am alive and have had no ill effects.
The rx strength of Ibus are usually 3-4 advils anyway but there may be a reason your dentist didn't prescribe.
I hope you feel better soon!

This is true for most people. People that should not take 800 mg of motrin include those who take aspirin, those with stomach issues, and some types of surgery. There are other issues also, but that is just a few common reasons.
I believe that GI bleeding and ulcers are the main reason not to take high dose motrin all the time.
