Lesson Plan Idea?

I have to write a lesson plan under the following standard

"Construct and interpret diagrams, tables and graphs made from recorded measurements and observations."

Anyone have any insight or help? I am pretty lost Chat Icon

Maybe, and this depends on time, but plant 5 seeds (different plants). Once they sprout, have the class make observations daily regarding growth. Maybe after 2 weeks, have them use this data to create the graph?

Re: Lesson Plan Idea?

I teach this lesson in my ninth grade bio class on an incredibly basic level so it could really be modified for any grade level.

Motivational Activity:
I put magnet of many, many, many different colors and shapes on the board and give them like 15-30 seconds to try and remember how many red triangles, how many blue circles, etc. I then cover them with the screen so students can no longer see them. I start to ask randomly how many of each color and shape there were. Most of the time, they can get a few, but never can they get all of them. I then ask them what would make it easier for them to tell me how many there were of each given one GIVEN THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME. Usually I get responses like :group by shape: :Group by color: etc. When then group them and make a chart for the information.

Notes: The lesson then centers around how graphs and charts organize data to make it easier to analyze and observe trends.

Conclusion: Brief,easy graphing exercise

Re: Lesson Plan Idea?

Have the kids measure one another's height using a meter stick (working with a partner or in groups) and round up or down to the nearest inch. Then make a "Class Height Data Chart" on the board where each group comes up and puts tally marks in the correct column for each person's height from their group (in 2 inch increments, such as 4'9"-4'11", 5'0"-5'2", etc.) Then once all the class data is up on the board, have the kids use that data to make a bar graph showing the heights for all students in the class. Then make up some analysis questions for them to answer about their data graph... for example... Do you see a pattern?, Which height range is most common in this class?, etc. so they can analyze their data. This way in this lesson they are measuring, taking down their data, making a chart, making a graph, and analyzing it... all your bases are covered.

Re: Lesson Plan Idea?

in the 4th grade everyday math program they do "head size" measurements and then create a tally chart and bar graph. (in cm)

Re: Lesson Plan Idea?

4th grade- each student can come up with their own "study" (favorite candy, holiday, subject in school, video game etc..) Then have each student collect data (they would probably work in groups) within the class. Once the data is collected the students construct a tally chart and a bar graph of the data collection. Dont forget to write a small reflection after :)

1st grade- give students a total of 15 seconds for a treasure hunt. When I did this it was Fall so I have leaves cut out and they were looking for leaves...
Then they create bar graphs from the leaves or objects they found.

Good luck

Re: Lesson Plan Idea?

I do this with ESL Students, so maybe it is aimed at an older age group (I teach adults), but I am sure you could make it somehow appropriate to the age group you are teaching.

I have them do a survey (the topic I use is health) and they have to ask questions around the school. They then make a graph, chart whatever.

Just saw that a previous poster does the same thing.

Re: Lesson Plan Idea?

This is a little messy, but we do something on how long it takes for a jaw breaker to change color, We use the ones that change collor a few times and we record the time.
