Social worker? UPDATE!

EI approved us for some sessions with a social worker.

I know it's a dumb question but how would a social worker help us? What do they do in cases with children with special needs?

TIA

UPDATE:

She came today. We talked. Her role is to guide us with any issues we may have, deal with the diagnostic on a more personal level, help us guide us through the process, etc...

I felt I needed to lay down on the couchChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It did "reopen" the wounds a bit when she asked how I felt when I was told about the diagnostic. Obviously, keeping busy has been "helping" but I realized today that I still have to deal with the whole thing. I thought I was "OK". Finding myself emotional about it again was a bit surprising. I guess I never give myself a break.Chat Icon

It's been awhile since I worked in EI but I believe the social worker acts as a coordinator and advocate. If you are having trouble with the agency, you can call her/him. Do you also have a service coordinator?

Yes we have a service coordinator. She is the one who told us about a social worker. Now I am not sure what they do for us

Re: Social worker?

They can help with your adjustment to EI and the diagnosis. They can also help in finding you resources in your community. They can also help with behavior management needs within the family. It is often like a counseling session.

Yes, social workers provide parent training.

I'm almost positive that it is mandatory for anyone in EI that has ABA services to have a Family Planner (social worker). Basically they can explain to you what your therapists are doing with your child and answer any questions you have about procedures. They can also assist if you do not like something your therapist is doing or you think the treatment should be going in a different direction. They can also help the parents adjust to having a child diagnosed and any issues that may arise in the family setting dealing with the diagnosis.

I sit in on all my DD's sessions and get along great with all the therapists so our Family Planner really doesn't do too much but she did help me in understanding some administrative stuff when DD starts school and offered some preschool suggestions.

Re: Social worker?

EI services include a parent trainer - I do parent training but I'm not a social worker.... I guess they decided to have the social worker provide the service....

Re: Social worker?

It is not mandory. Our parent training is actually with the Team Leader (one of the ABA therapist).

The EI offered 6 sessions with a social worker if we were interested. So I was wondering how she could "help" us.

You are right- it is not mandatory. It may be provided because of the grief that is involved when learning your child has a disability, and help you with those emotions, finding resources to help deal with it, etc....

Re: Social worker?

Interesting. I was told it was absolutely nessessary for all ABA families from the county. I'll have to question them during our next meeting because I (and everyone agrees) we do not need one. We were just following "county" rules.

Thanks for the info! Chat Icon

Re: Social worker? UPDATE!

We have a social worker. She is GREAT and helps with eveything that we might need help with. I have to say that I owe most of Steven's progress to her!!! And all she does is talk to us and asks us how we think we can handle certain things, etc.
