Stiuation with my brand-new floors... and a ? about contracts
DH and I had our family room totally renovated this past summer (Aug 08). We took out a wall, changed out the floors, painted, put up crown moldings... the works.
Fas-forward two or three months. We started to see GAPS in between our floorboards!! So we called our contractor, and he filed a claim with the company that makes our floors. They come in, inspect, and ultimately tell us that the floors were installed incorrectly.
Do we call the contractor? What do we say? Can I hold him responsible for the cost of purchasing and installing new flooring? (We have a 1-year warrantee on all work he completes in our contract). Help!

YES call the contractor, esp if you have a warranty! You should have it in writing from the company that they were installed incorrectly and are able to show that to the contractor. Hopefully they work with you!

did they leave the wood in your house for a few days before installation?
It sounds like, since you installed in the summer, that the wood contracted during the cooler months and thats why the gaps occured Definitely an installation issue!!

That's what I was thinking too.
I've seen floors with actual rolling hills in them because of moisture problems.

Sounds right to me. Definitely call your contractor- that's why they're insured.

I got the company to email me a copy of the report. What shoud we demand that he do? I know the contractor is going to offer to fix the existing floors. Should I insist on new materials?

call him asap. have him do whatever necessary to perfect your floors. if that means bringing in new wood, so be it.

How big are the gaps? Most hardwood installers will tell you that small gaps are normal in winter when the wood contracts and they will disappear in the warmer weather when it expands. Don't know how true this is.

These are huge (1/4 inch in some places) gaps. I've heard that smaller gaps disappear, but this size is way beyond normal...

The wood should've been left in the room for AT LEAST 4 days to acclimate (I think the boxes are supposed to be opened during that time too). This way the wood can shrink or expand (depending on moisture in the room) before it's installed so you don't end up with this problem. A 1/4" gap is definitely not normal.

Definitely an installation issue. Call the contractor back, and tell him that the people they told you to call came and said that it was an installation issue... so he shouldn't be able to argue b/c the COMPANY already said it was the contractors issue, not there's... GOOD LUCK

A 1/4" gap is definitely too big. Contact the installer to see if you can work things out.
