"Well you don't have kids....
so you just don't understand."
Sorry, but
Just because I don't have kids. Must make me slower, or not as smart as YOU because YOU have kid(s).
I was a nanny for about 6 years, I am the youngest of 6 kids, I have 15 nieces and nephews. I think I know a thing or two about kids.
Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

My boss does this to me.
"When you have kids you'll realize how good it is.."
OK, and what if I don't realize 'how good it is" and instead I realize "how much I really didn't want this" ?

Re: "Well you don't have kids....
I used to get this one a lot when I was teaching.
No, I haven't given birth, and I don't know firsthand what it's like to raise a child, but YOU've never been to ed school, completed a master's degree in teaching, and had 5 years of experience in the classroom, not to mention student teaching, countless hours of tutoring, and volunteering with kids in afterschool programs. Not being a parent myself does not mean I don't know what I'm talking about. So how about we work together on your child's education now?

Yea, I know I just dont understand. I have been a nanny for over 16 years. I have a degree in Child Development with an emphasis in parenting. I dont claim to be a know it all but I know my stuff. I am honored when people trust me enough to ask for help and advice.
But how many times I have heard you still dont understand. It will be so different when/if you have your own kids.
I would love to be the American version of Supernanny!!!!

Re: "Well you don't have kids....
This makes me crazy...although I don't seem to be hearing it lately after 2.5 years of Infertility treatments and 3 miscarriages..
Also, what was infuriating about it, especially from my BIL (husband's brother), is that DH did 10 years of child psych at Schneiders - inpatient. His answer to his brother was always "no, i don't have one like you, I had 16, all at once that were locked up in a psych facility. deal with that."
Needless to say we don't get that comment from the IL's anymore.

Re: "Well you don't have kids....
I get that there are situations that you encounter as a parent that are much different than anything you had when you were childless.
But the phrase, "You don't understand" implies ignorance. I don't think I can relate to everything a parent goes through, sleepless nights, being responsible for another life and all the tough choices that go along with that. But I don't have to be brushed aside as being ignorant of it all either.
Can't I sympathize with my friends who do have children, without having gone through it myself? Without having my own child-rearing stories, it may be a one sided conversation, but I'm capable of listening. Anyone who is a friend of mine who has children also knows that I do tend to ask questions if I don't understand something. And if asked for my opinion on something, I'll give it but preface it by saying "I'm not a parent but..." It's good to have differing opinions, isn't it?

Re: "Well you don't have kids....
That phrase just drives me crazy. No, I have not given birth to a child. No I am not a parent.
I am 10 years older than my youngest brother and cousins. Who do you think was the babysitter from the day they were born??
Just because I am not a parent does not mean I can not comprehend what you are talking about in terms of being a parent!!!

Re: "Well you don't have kids....
Well, no I don't have kids, so I can't share birth stories with you. But I did start babysitting when I was 11 years old, and the child was 3 months old. I sat for this child until he was 8 years old. I worked summers in a day camp for children ages 4 to 14. Did this for 5 years. I have a nephew and niece that I am quite involved with in their lives. I'm proud of the fact that I don't gag at dirty diapers or projectile vomiting.
No, I don't have kids, but I've had to take care of a very sick parent, including bathing, feeding and diaper changes.
No, I don't have kids, but I've had experience with them, and it breaks my heart that I can't share that experience with one of my own.
