Q about the OT "therapy"
The OT is doing "joint compression". Mostly his fingers/hands. Honestly I am NOT crazy about this.
DS has upper low tone muscles.
Do any of you know what I am doing about? What is your experience with this? If anyone is an OT, please talk to me.

Re: Q about the OT "therapy"
They do joint compression on many of the students in my school. It looks a lot more uncomfortable than it is, but does help with sensory integration when done with brushing.

Re: Q about the OT "therapy"
yes, hannah gets brushed and then joint compressions. the ot recommended doing the brushing first followed by joint compressions. it helps with proprioception (input through muscles and joints.) check out this link:

Re: Q about the OT "therapy"
i do it with josh as per his ot and pt b/c of his low muscle tone throughout his body. the pt says it is not a quick fix for anything but in time (maybe a year) it'll help tighten his joints and strengthen him.
i do it 2 x a day, 3 reps of 30 on his: ankles, kneew, hip.
i also did it a lot with the kids in my school and with them i also did arms, shoulders, wrists.

I agree. Joint compression worked very well for some children in helping to reorganize their sensory system, in many cases calming them down so they could better focus on the tasks ahead.

Re: Q about the OT "therapy"
My son use to go for OT and received the joint compression therapy as part of his treatment as well. He has sensory issues - mostly tactile and propioceptive and it helps with both. He no longer get services (bc CSE doesn't recognize sensory issues like EI & CPSE do ) and we still do it at home as well as still use the surgical brush. My DS likes it and it does have a positive effect on him. Does your son dislike it? I'm not a professional so I know others are more qualified to answer from that standpoint but my DS didn't like it at first but came to enjoy it. They told me that that is usually the case before they even started and they were right.

Re: Q about the OT "therapy"
My son LOVES joint compression. It is a great sensory, and the OT has been doing brushing with him. I just bought a trampoline for him, and I have seen a big difference in his awareness.

Re: Q about the OT "therapy"
This goes hand in hand with wilbarger's brushing protocol. Has the OT give you a brush or your own? You can do it on your child yourself, it needs to be done throughout the day. When I see a child he/she will usually get "brushed" before I get there so he/she is calm/focused/ etc for the session, not that it always does the trick.

Re: Q about the OT "therapy"
The most important - how does Ethan respond to it?
A good OT usually knows when a child needs joint compression. It should soothe him, and he should appear to like the way it feels.
If he moves his body away, or acts very hyper all of a sudden from it, it is not appropriate for him....
