Are you buying Christening outfit now?

Or waiting until your LO gets here? Christening is scheduled for ~3 months so I can't imagine she would be bigger than a 3-6 month dress...

Thoughts?

I know if our family, the godmother buys the Christening outfit, it is a gift.

OOOOOO -- I had no idea! Do you "register" for it or is is just the GM's decision?

I would wait - you'll never know what size your DC will be in. My son was 4 months old when he was Christened and in a 12 month old suit.

In my family, the godmother also buys it!

Same with my family too. You kind of just make a nice day of it together. ETA: After LO is born and approaching Christening.

NOpe. I have one that my entire family uses. I am not sure if I am going to use it. If it is a girl I might go to the IRish store in Cold Spring Harbor and get this beautiful Irish Lace one I saw. If it's a boy.. i'll use the familiy one.

BTW... just discussing not using is causing such drama in my family.

I'm tempted to turn my wedding dress into a christening gown. Might be too much work this late in the game, though....

see now in my family, the godmother buys the babies first cross (a really nice one of course). My mom bought my nephews outfit. I'd love to turn my gown into the christening outfit, I think you have time if you still wanted to Chat Icon

Re: Are you buying Christening outfit now?

No it's usually custom for the godmother to get it. So since we haven't picked one yet nor even started christening plans yet....guess we should start thinking of that at some point- just seams to be the last thing on my mind these days

I bought Alexa's before she was born. I knew when we were having it and about what size I would need. It was too good a price to pass up plus it is really hard to find.

I wanted to do the whole wedding gown thing too but it was too expensive and not worth the extra money right now.

I am having the same exact delima.. I asked my SIL if I can go with her and she got very adamint about her picking it out and wanting it to be surprise for me.. I was so taken back.. I have been the godmother of 3 children already.. I have always allowed the parents to pick it out and I just paid for it and dressed the baby that morning.. She really refused to let me get involved.. My Dh and mother think I should just let it go and let her do her thing Chat Icon So i decided to let it go.. I do have a little resentment but I think its worse to look a gift horse in the mouth.. I did tell her no bonnet just a pretty headband.. So I hope she honors that.. This is very hard for me.. This will be my one and only child Chat Icon

Awwww! I can't imagine not being able to have any say in my DCs christening outfit!!! I understand that the godmother usually pays, but I would still want to pick it out. I already know what type of dress I want if it's a girl and I may buy it myself. (Because it's expensive, and I don't expect the godmother to pay for something that I specifically want.)

I don't blame you for being upset. I would be too!! Chat Icon

Re: Are you buying Christening outfit now?

I would wait...depends on the size of your LO & godmother's thoughts & time of year, etc.

I had my wedding gown made into a christening gown for my daughter. A girl's mom on the board made it for me in 10 days!!!

You should absolutely wait until DC is here. You really don't know how big or long they will be. JMO

Re: Are you buying Christening outfit now?

I also think a lot of this depends on when you are having the actual christening. Some people have them early and some people wait months. That is going to make a big difference in what size outfit you get.

Re: Are you buying Christening outfit now?

Traditionally in our family, the godmother purchases the christening out....We usually make a day of it & do lunch & purchase it all together.

In our situation, if we have a little girl, she will most likely be wearing my dress & if it is a boy, he will wear the one my nephew one which is a family heirloom. We are still not sure if we are christening the baby immediately or waiting...

Re: Are you buying Christening outfit now?

For those of you that want to buy your own... in my family the tradition is that the godmother buys the cross necklace since we have a family heriloom gown.

That way the godmother gets to pick out something really nice anyway.
