Wel if that didn't hurt...

My nephew/godson's first birthday was last weekend. He's just starting to walk and is really wiggly. I was sitting in a big armchair and he was tucked next to me with my legs dangling over the sides so he couldn't out. My SIL's father and mother were right there and he started lecturing me on my "biological clock tick, tick, tick tocking away" and I needed to get married ASAP because "you've been together too long NOT to have kids by now" and some other stupid remarks Chat Icon

Then I got up and let the baby stay in the chair with my right in front of it, my eyes always on him, but giving him space to sit. He wasn't even moving when my SIL's mother rushed past me and yelled, "What, you just gonna leave him like that???" I turned to her and said, "Excuse me? Leave him like what? He is sitting in the chair and I am blocking it with my body." Then she said, "Well what do you know? You don't have kids, and if you did I'd be worried!"

I felt like garbage. I am not irresponsible. He was not in any type of danger. I told my FBIL who told his MIL to leave if she ever spoke to me like that again. I really dislike this woman anyway, but that just hurt.

Damn! It sucks that they couldn't appreciate you spending quality time with him and to turn it into a lecture. Chat Icon Sounds like you had a good eye on him in the chair as well. Chat Icon

Honey don't even worry about it.

Easier said then done I know but I am sure you are 100% more capable then some close minded meany. of watching your gc.

Pay no mind to older people most of them don't have a clue to todays lifestyle choices.

Jesus that was so uncalled for. Some people really need to keep their f'ing comments to themselves. I HATE more then anything when offensive assumptions are made.

Re: Wel if that didn't hurt...

I once had something like that happen to me, when I was a lifeguard and only 18!

A mom left her kid (maybe about 3 years old) to play in the water and walked away. I was standing at the edge of the pool, he was holding on to the edge right below me and it was shallow and he was able to stand, plus his mom had those floating arm things on him. There was no reason to be concerned, plus if he had trouble all of a sudden all I had to do was bend down and pick him up out of the water. Having been a lifeguard for 2 years and a swim teacher too, my judgement on how well a kid could do was always correct and never in all my years of lifeguarding did I ever have to rescue a kid (just dumb adults).

So the mom comes back a few minutes later, sees that her kid has drifted about a foot away from the stairs (still in the standing area and still holding on to the wall, mind you), shreaks, and plows into the water, grabs her son and starts screaming, he could have drowned, he was so deep! And all of us lifeguards are just standing there with open mouths as she hauls her kid away.

This story is just a way of saying that it doesn't matter if you have kids or not, you can be a responsible person without kids or an irrresponsible person with lots of kids, it doesn't matter. The mere fact that you are a mom doesn't make you somehow more responsible or better able to gauge danger. My stepson gets into more playground accidents with his biological mom than either me or DH.
