I'm sorry, those cookies were HOW much???

So I went to a local Italian Bakery today to pick up some cookies to bring to my in laws for Easter.
They had a whole bunch of plates of Italian cookies- all wrapped in cellophane with a ribbon, etc.
I chose one of the smaller ones and brought it to the register.
She rings me up and says... $25!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was like - Excuse me? She repeats it. I said- out of curiousity, how many pounds of cookies is that? She says- Oh that plate is 1 pound.

$25 for ONE pound of cookies? Are you freakin' KIDDING me??

And when I walk in with this little tiny plate of cookies, it's going to look like I spent about 10 bucks. I mean this thing is SMALL.

HAPPY EASTER! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yep! I always steer clear of Italian cokies and pastries. They always cost an arm and a leg.

The delicious Italian bakery near me is like that too. But if you were to buy just a plain old, not fancy wrapping, pound of cookies, it's about $12. Still expensive, but not a rip off like the wrapped pound.Chat Icon

did you go to dortonis?

bon boulangerie (also owned by them) is our local place, and it costs that much over there also....

it's pretty criminal.... however, I DO understand why it's like that... they bake A LOT and have to toss a good deal becuase it's not sold that day....

As somebody who makes them at home I can tell you that Italian cookies also require a ton of work and high priced ingredients.

Re: I'm sorry, those cookies were HOW much???

i remember when i was first dating vinny - i have never had a pastry in my life - we just didn't eat them and they were never around (hello, irish household)... well, when i met vinny (hello italian) i wanted to bring something they would like so i went to the bakery to get italian pastries. i wanted to get a large amount b/c it needs to look abundant... i forget how many i got but it wasn't a really large amount - nice for a dinner party with his family -- it came to like 38 dollars or something!!!! of course, i paid it and when i got there my now MIL said, omg you must have spent a fortune!!! i was like, oh thank god that's the NORM! i thought i was being taken for a ride! LOL I am so used to that, doesn't even sound like a lot to me at this point!

But I have to agree with a PP, we make cookies that are similar to pignolis and we end up spending close to $100 on ingredients just for those each Christmas

I think the bakery near me (which generally is expensive & charges about $7 for loaf of bread) only charges $12-$15 a pound, but that's just in a box. Almost double for cellophane is a lot!

The cookies are excellent though--way better than the supermarket, but I have eaten bakery cookies that were not as good as supermarket cookies good, and it is a total waste of money.
