Which career path has more openings & dollars
Ok, so DH is still working sub-custodian work. Things don't look the brightest.
So my question is, which would be a wiser investment for a career? Which has more earning potential and more openings?
Security Guard (he would go to a class to get his license)
or
a CDL license (he'd have to take the tests & road tests). This would be good to drive large vehicles (ie trucks)

I know a few CDL drivers who were laid off...
I'd do both - each part time. The CDL license he could use at limo companies to drive party buses and such - that's decent P/T work.
Do you work? Would you guys be able to get medical under your employment?

yes, we get medical through my job anyway.
What about CDL-S (to drive school buses).

I think a CDL would be a great idea! Definitely a more "permanent" carrer kind of move in my opinion!

Re: Which career path has more openings & dollars
DH has his CDL and got it when he worked for a car rental company mannnny years ago (that didn't pay too well or have good security). Now he works for MTA and they have decent salaries, good benefits (not just health insurance).
Of course, MTA isn't in the best shape these days. But CDLs open up lots of different avenues. He could even get a job with NY Sanitation - they pay well, and there's room for moving up. My friend's DH became a supervisor after 5 years. And there's lots of OT work available, especially in the winters.
ETA: On the flip side, my BIL (DH's brother) has his security license and doesn't get paid too well, has no benefits at all. Totally depends on where you get a job, but I just don't know how good of an option this would be for your DH considering the economy.

One good thing about security guards is that if the company you work for has several locations its easier to chance locations if one place isn't working out.

I know most security jobs pay around $18-$24/hr...not sure about the benefits though...
