Knitting help please!

I am trying to knit a blanket. I wanted to just do squares of different colors and then sew them together.

So I did my first square. 36 stitches and 36 rows.......

and....

It's a rectangle????

What went wrong?

Does a row not equal a stitch?

Re: Knitting help please!

i tried to learn to knit last year when helping with a coworkers baby blanket.

we each knitted squares. i think we did 60 stiches..so it was 30, double stich, then 30, and then you count down. but every other row did the double stitch.

i learned knitting isnt for me.

good luck!

Re: Knitting help please!

a knit stitch is not a square.

a knit stitch is shorter than it is wide.

how to fix:
grab a tape measure.
* measure how many stitches ACROSS give you an inch
* measure how many stitches UP give you an inch
then do the simple math: if you want a square X inches by X inches then you multiply how many stiches across you need and how many rows you need.
