Welcome to the world Matthew!

On Sat night we were at our nephews communion and towards the end of the party I started feeling what I thought were gas pains. I told DH it was time to go so we left...I really thought nothing more of it and went to bed as soon as we got home. I got up frequently throughout the night b/c of the same "gas pains".

On Sunday, April 19th I woke up at 4:30 in the morning and realized I was having contractions. I quickly woke DH up and told him I thought I might be in labor and that we should start timing them. At this point they were about 13 minutes apart. We did that until around 8 am when we decided to call the doctor. We were sent to the hospital for some monitoring since it was a Sunday. At the hospital I was examined and told that yes I was having contractions but I was only 1-2 cm dilated. They sent me home to labor some more because “the baby could come anytime in the next FEW days”.

Well that was disappointing for me, because the contractions hurt and for us, because we wanted to meet this baby already. So we went home and took a nap and I woke up to more painful contractions that were now a little erratic and not much closer together. At this point I think we both figured nothing was going to happen quickly. We decided to take a walk around the block and this seemed to move things along a little. They were now coming around 9 minutes apart. It was about 4 pm and DH decided I should have something spicy to eat so he got Spicy Chicken Sandwiches from Wendy’s. I’m not sure that really did anything but I was in quite a bit of pain at that point and couldn’t really sit or lay around anymore so we moved the party to the backyard. We just walked and walked and walked around. Ginger(our Yorkie) didn’t know WHAT was going on but she liked being outside with us.

We came back in as the sun started to go down and before we knew it my contractions were down to 5 and 6 minutes apart. DH started to freak out a little because we had a 25 minute drive to the hospital and I was afraid to go to the hospital because the contractions weren’t at a consistent 5 minutes apart. We put a call into the doctor and raced back to Stony Brook.

We arrived at the hospital and the annoying girl behind the desk made us wait in the waiting room for an excruciating 25 minutes. I was contracting every 4 minutes at that point. I got into triage for my examination and I was already 4 cm dilated. We were admitted and I was offered the epidural. After laboring for many hours, I jumped at the thought of being pain free.

I had the epidural at around 9pm and it was a miracle drug. The doctor decided to give me pitocin to move things along and I went from 5 cm to 10 cm in a few hours. Our labor and delivery nurse, Marie, was unbelievable! She was so wonderful and encouraging throughout the whole process. Before I knew it I was ready to push. Marie grabbed one leg and she had DH grab the other and I pushed for maybe 30 minutes. On the last push they actually had me bend over and pull him the rest of the way out--that was WILD! It was such a natural calm environment...and felt like it was exactly how a baby should come into the world.

Our beautiful boy Matthew entered the world at 4 am. He weighed in at 7 pounds 6 oz and 19 inches long. He received a 9 on the APGAR.

I have to say the whole delivery was just an unbelievable experience. It’s something DH and I will never forget. This has been a very long journey for us, we dealt with IF for 18 months before getting pregnant with IVF. It has made each day with our little miracle that much sweeter.

Matthew is perfect in every way. He’s ADORABLE and such a good baby. He even gave us 8 hours of sleep last night! Our families adore him and he has received so much love from everyone whom he has had the opportunity to meet thus far.

Stony Brook University Hospital was such a wonderful place to deliver. Everyone there was great, the rooms were beautiful and I was given exactly the kind of birthing experience I had hoped for. If anyone has any questions feel free to FM me about it.
