How do you prevent weeds?
I know this may seem silly but Dh is doing some landscaping work and is replacing some shrubbery with smaller shrubs and flowers....he has already ripped up the old shrubs, rotter tilled (sp) the area and put down some soil
We plan to put some mulch down too but is there anything we can do to prevent weeds from coming through?
TIA
As you can tell, I do NOT have a green thumb, AT ALL

Re: How do you prevent weeds?
if you're only putting mulch down in a large area, a good layer of landscaping plastic underneath the mulch would suffice....
for garden beds, spinkle preen around the flowers.

so if we have soil down now, do we put the landscaping plastic on top of the soil but under the mulch?
Thanks

Yes.
It won't eliminate them entirely but you probably won't have to weed this season.
Only sure way to completely prevent them is do what some of my old neighbors did, cement everywhere

Landscaping fabric and preen should do the trick

I'm not a fan of the landscaping fabric... I read you can use a layer of newspaper under the mulch to help prevent weeds

Re: How do you prevent weeds?
Just make sure you put the mulch down thick, 3-4 inches and you will get little to no weeds!

Re: How do you prevent weeds?
I really don't like using chemicals, so I just use mulch. If you want you can try putting corn gluten in the beds, though that only protects against certain weeds and it won't do you much good this year, but should help next year.
Honestly, if you put down a good layer of mulch, you don't get many weeds. A few, but it's not hard ot get rid of them.

This is what we do and I only have to weed about 3-4 times a season.
