Masters Programs
Sorry to crash, but I am graduating in January with a BA in Elementary Education with a Special Education extension.
I am looking at masters programs and I am so overwhelmed by all the choices.
How did you pick where you are going? I have narrowed the schools down to about four. They all have the program I am looking for - Literacy.
Is there a site to go on and compare programs?

Honestly, I would go to the place that's the least expensive.
I think most of these programs are the same and I don't think any guarantee you an easier job search process!

I was going to post the exact same thing.
I went to CUNY Queens College for my Masters and was happy with it. Price was great, and I got a LI teaching job the second week after I started sending out resumes.

If I had to do it again, I would go to CUNY Queens and not Hofstra, which I will be paying off FOREVER

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
My husband suggested going the cheaper route but I was not sure if where you received your masters mattered in obtaining a job.
My search will continue......... if you don't mind me asking, what is are your masters in?

I have a dual masters in Elementary AND Special Ed.
I got mine at Hofstra but honestly I could have gone the cheaper route. I was not impressed with Hofstra by any means.

I got my Literacy Cert at Hofstra and had a great experience. I learned so much and was able to use so much of it. I would recommend Hofstra.
I got my first Masters in Elem Ed at CW Post and I thought that was a complete waste of money and really learned nothing!

Ditto. I really liked Hofstra, but it was pricey. I didn't go to QC b/c it would have been an hour/90 minute commute each way (I was living in eastern Suffolk at the time) but the gas and car repairs would've cost less than my tuition to a private school!
eta: I got a MS in School Counseling.

I got my Literacy degree at Dowling.
It was very expensive, but I paid cash for the whole thing - totally worth that struggle in the beginning to not have any student loan debt.
The program itself, for me, was a piece of cake. I finished with my Masters in 2 years.

I am currently getting my Master's at LIU in Brentwood. It is pricey ($930 a credit) but I love the school. Small classes and everyone is very helpful. I looked into Queens college but just couldn't do the commute (I commuted into the city for my BA). I would definitely look into LIU. They have campuses all over the island.

if you are looking at 4 different schools i would say its a combination of 2 factors
price and location
you don't want to be paying this off forever
also what school would be an easy to decent commute for you, you have to think about possibly getting there after work or any other home obligations you may have
they may ask where you went but i really dont think it matters, i went to brooklyn college for my masters and got a job in part because the person hiring actually knew one of my professors so its not always about the most prestigious school

I went to Fordham in Manhattan and was very happy with their program. it was very research based and more scholarly (I had to write a thesis, pass a masters competency exam). There was very little of the BS "teacher crap" a lot of programs make you do. many many interviewers commented on my degree from Fordham. they liked that i didn't go to the same schools as everyone else on LI. that said, though, i only went to fordham because i worked there and received tuition remission. i would have never been able to afford their program otherwise.
like others have said, i would go somewhere affordable. i don't know your financial situation, but if can't afford a lot, don't go to the really pricey places. it's not worth it. a masters in ed. is so typical nowadays and with the job market the way it is, it's not opening any major doors for people, unfortunately.
Private schools, i would recommend Fordham, Teachers College- Columbia, NYU, Hofstra and Brookly College.
State/City: Queens College is awesome! Hunter and Baruch have good programs too. I don't know what SUNY has to offer.. sorry!

I love all of the suggestions but I also think you should research occupational therapy and physical therapy. If I could go back again I would do it !

I also got my first masters in school counseling and chose Hofstra over QC, b/c I had heard parking was difficult at QC and it was 18 less credits (42 v 60). I thought that would have saved money. I hated Hofstra and the advisor.
I went back for a 2nd masters (MLIS) at QC and was so completely pleased with the school. I felt like there was much more individual attention (but that could have been the program) the program is nationally ranked and parking was no problem at all with the parking permit. Best of all is that I don't owe a dime...meanwhile, I still have a little bit left of my Hofstra loans 9 years later.
