charter schools

wats the difference btwn charter and regular schools?
pros and cons of a charter school?
salary??

the position is for social worker and the charter school is in LI... I don't know if it makes a huge difference. I went for an interview and they did say they are not part of the NYS retirement system. It is a not profit organization...I'm not sure about hours but they did say they have typical school days as public schools..

thanks for any feedback...

Re: charter schools

Charter schools are run by an independent group. The teachers are typically not covered by unions (though there are a few in NYC that are under the UFT). That means that work hours, responsibilities, class size, and the length of the school year may vary somewhat from a typical public school. Salaries are usually comparable - or even higher - but this may also compensate for a longer school day or year.

Good luck!

Re: charter schools

I interviewed with two charter schools and I was not happy with their set up.

The school day starts at 7:30 and ends at 4:30. You must stay after school for PD twice a week.

I was also told I must be available on the weekends and on prep times for whatever they need me for. That means even helping the kids off the school bus.

The school year starts earlier and ends later too.

I was not thrilled with their set-up, but that is all that seems to be hiring now.
Some pay 10% more for the longer hours, some do not pay well at all.

You are not union either.
I ended up going the private school route.

That isn't union either, but I needed a job and their expectations were more reasonable.

The city really sucks right now for new teachers.

Good Luck!
