Walkable Long Island
So, this summer DH and I would like to do some day trips out to LI. Maybe an overnight or weekend trip, if I can find a cat friendly place.
The catch is that we don't have a car.
A friend of mine suggested Long Beach- easily accessible by LIRR and everything is pretty centrally located.
BTW- we like walking, so centrally located can be up to 2-4 miles as long as we aren't walking on the shoulder of the highway.
Suggestions?

Re: Walkable Long Island
Montauk would be great for a weekend. Train goes right there and the whole town can be covered on foot. Nice beaches, reasonable hotels, great restaurants, some night life. Don't know about the cat though...
Port jefferson might be nice, but limited on hotels...

How about taking the Hampton Jitney from Manhattan?
here's a link to their site
they have a few destinations, not just the hamptons. and I didn't realize it, but they have day tours too.

If you go to Port Jeff - Danford's On The Sound is beautiful, has a great restaurant and it's an inn. You can check with them, but they may have shuttle service from the train station to the inn.

I agree with the jitney. Riverhead is also a nice place to visit. It's got a great downtown, the aquarium, the tanger outlets and splish splash. The last two you would need public transportation to get to though.
