How long does one usually wait to take a vacation after starting a new job?

I know I won't be able to take a real vacation (not weekend trip) until after I finish my dissertation in Oct/Nov. But I did tell DH that for my 30th birthday, I want to take a big trip (probably Dominican Republic). My birthday is in January. So by the time we find jobs and move to NY, we may start our jobs around December.

What is the usual wait time before asking for time off/taking vacation days?

every job is different

I know of some people who negotiated vacation time in the interviewing process.

my DH did this - he got a job while we were in the middle of wedding planning and already booked the HM. he told his now boss about needing the time off for the wedding and HM and it worked out fine.

it depends.

Like the previous poster said you can negotiate it when you are made an offer if you have a trip already planned but it may be unpaid.

Some places, you accrue vacation hours per pay period so your days may not have vacation time immediately.

Some employers have a probationary period for 60 or 90 days, where you can't take any time off.

Yeah, just tell them tat you already have one planned, and most of the time it is OK.
