CF Women and higher risks of Ovarian Cancer
I've read a few articles stating that childfree women have a greater risk of ovarian cancer than women with children. I'm always very fearful of this, but I was hoping we could a discussion. Thoughts?

Re: CF Women and higher risks of Ovarian Cancer
Interesting...I just did a quick google search. BCP's also lower the risk..I wonder why that is?? ...gonna research a bit more...
ETA: Just read this on cancerhelp.org....interesting:
Risk factors for ovarian cancer: We don't know exactly what causes epithelial ovarian cancer. But some factors may increase the risk. Other factors seem to reduce it. Many factors seem to be related to the working of the ovaries. When one of your ovaries produces an egg, the surface layer of the ovary bursts to release the egg. The surface cells then divide to repair the damage. The more eggs your ovaries produce during your life time, the more cells need to divide and the higher the chance that damage will occur that could lead to cancer.

That's a scary thought.. Ovarian cancer is pretty hard to detect which is even scarier

How much of a higher risk? Were genetic factors also taken into account?
I've heard BCPs lower the risk of ovarian cancer, but also that they raise the risk of breast cancer -- I lost my aunt to breast cancer and my mom is a survivor, so this is a bigger concern for me than any potential that BCPs would lower my risk of ovarian cancer.

Re: CF Women and higher risks of Ovarian Cancer
My mom has ovarian cancer. When we talked to the oncologist, yes, he did say that being childfree increased one's risk, as well as some other things like being overweight/high fat diet and smoking or drinking and I honestly forget the others he mentioned. I just focused on the childfree because I knew I fell into that category.
I don't worry about it to be honest... I just had a patch of skin cancer removed from my back. It was squamous cell. They say that squamous cell affects men, in their 50's with a history of sun or arsenic exposure... Well, I am 36, female, rarely go in the sun... I just feel like if I am going to get it, I will get it. My mom had 2 children and she still got it. I don’t put much stock in those statistics unless it’s REALLY strong, like the smoking/lung cancer type ones.

Yeah it's really hard to say. My MIL had ovarian cancer and she had FOUR kids. So I'm not sure how true all these theories are...

I was going to say this as well. I also read things about the less you ovulate, the higher your risk of OC, but then I know someone who died of ovarian cancer who had 4 children and several miscarriages.
