3/19 UPDATE Signing up for classes through unemployment
Anyone ever do this?
I went today to get more information and signed up for the Microsoft Word/Excell programs for next month.
I am also waiting to hear back about the photoshop program.
It figured I'd take advantage of what they offer since all the classes are free
3/19/09 UPDATE--so I finished the Word & Excel classes and I'm so happy I took them. I really learned a lot in Excel. This program scared me I will be going back next week to learn more through the tutorial classes they offer. Until than, I've been practicing at home with a small workbook they handed out. I have to say there were a lot of people taking these classes. It's sad to see how many people are unemployed but on the flip side it's nice to see them taking the classes to better themselves.
Just wanted to give an update. And let anyone know it's worth going to if you were considering it.

I haven't...but it's bc the area I'm designated to take them..not a fun area, lol.....
My friend has and she said it was okoay, but a LOT of people don't know waht they are doing, so its really slow.
I think im getting enough practice taking those stupid tests at recruiters tho...

Re: Signing up for classes through unemployment
The state paid for my dad about 15 years ago to take computer classes (the certified A+ course). He was on unemployment and could not find jobs so they offered him that and 6 months later he had great skills and a great job. I would go for it take what you can get.

Re: Signing up for classes through unemployment
Received my email to sign up for my on line Photoshop class I'm so excited for this. It's something I really want to learn to become a better photographer. I'll sign up tomorrow morning. TV OFF and settle in at the computer at 8am.

I didn't know they had photoshop courses! I would love to do that. I also want to sign up for the access class they have. What I hate is that you have to go all the way to the unemployment office just to sign up for a class - why they don't allow you to do it online or over the phone makes no sense to me whatsoever. But I think I will go there next week to get some free resume paper and sign up ..
FYI, they also offer computer-led classes that you do on your own time, with headphones - I would sign up for this most likely because you don't have to wait for anyone else.

Re: 3/19 UPDATE Signing up for classes through unemployment
Thank you so much!!! This is great...I am actually going to the One-Stop in Hauppauge today to register...
They said it is about a 1 hour introduction presentation and I have to fill out a form...Does it really take that long?
Anyway- I hope these are worth it! Any chance if you know you can actually get "certified" in some classes?
TIA!

The introduction class does take about an hr. Only because they go over everything they offer and people may have questions. It's painless But I thought they only did these on friday?
As for the certified classes, they offer on line courses and I believe you receive some kind of certificate after completion.
But I didn't receive anything from the Word or Excel classes that were taken in the office in Hauppauge.
Good Luck today...let us know how you make out.

Thank you so much! Maybe due to the increase of unemployement they are doing another session? I had to wait like 2 weeks in order to get into one of these registation classes...I will let you know how it goes...

I was thinking that too about the increase of unemployment. It's great to see people taking advantage of what they offer!
And yes you can wear jeans.
They also list job opportunities in the snack/soda room. So you may want to check that out.

So I went to the intro class of the Suffolk County One-Stop Employement...It was nice and I may use their services soon...I would suggest people to go and take advantage of it...

Re: 3/19 UPDATE Signing up for classes through unemployment
I just wanted to bump this thread. Has anyone else taken advantage of these classes? I am definitely going to look into them. I'm worried about not being up to date or up to speed, since I really have not worked in Excel, PP, Word or Photoshop these past several months.
