split-level homes
1- has anyone put an extension on their side-by-side splits? what rooms did you extend?
2- did anyone do an extension above the living room/dining room (like to add a master bedroom above the living room)?
can you show me pictures?

Re: split-level homes
All of the houses on our block, including ours, are front to back splits.
Some people have put a bedroom over the kitchen, which is on the main level but doesn't have a vaulted ceiling like the living room/dining room does in our model. They break thorough the linen closet upstairs and make that the doorway and then make the room over the kitchen. That seems to be a common one since it's not that much work as the frame is already there and you are just adding a window, flooring and sheet rock for the most part.
Some people (including us) have an addition over our garage that is accessible through the master bedroom. Our is a storage room that was added almost 40 years ago, but most people have made it into a master bedroom and bathroom, and made the old master bedroom a regular bedroom, which we'll probably do in the future.
Some people have added a room or two onto the back off the den.
One family by us that has a lot of kids has put bedrooms over the living room/dining room, but I've not been up there to see what they did.

Re: split-level homes
I have a side-to-side split but its one of a few in my neighborhood that's never been extended (yet!).
Our living/dining/kitchen is on the "second" level to the right and people in my neighborhood have mostly pushed out in the back to add a basement level down below and a bigger kitchen/family room/dining room.
All of our garages are attached and most have added a room onto the garage that serves as the master bedroom. And, some have made a two level push on the lowest level (a den) and the highest level (the bedrooms) to add more bedrooms on top and a bigger family room down below.
One person went over their living/dining/kitchen to add bedrooms and raised the roof a bit in that spot. It looks enormous though -- almost as if its a fourth level.

Re: split-level homes
yes- thats what im talking about
my mom and dad had a side to side split; youd walk in, and the living room and dining room were on the right, kitchen straight back. the bedrooms were up 6 steps on the left, and the den was 6 steps down. then, there were 6 more steps out of the den into the basement.
i was just wondering if anyone had ever extended over the kitchen or living room to make a huge master bedroom, because the bedrooms in most splits arent too huge...
you said the house or extension looks enormous- does it look Ridiculous, like, out of place, or does it look nice on the outside?

Re: split-level homes
Yes! I grew up in a split but my neighbor extended theirs to go up above the kitchen, DR and LR. Their extension was a master bedroom suite with master bath and another room, more office type than a BR. It was awesome and did not look HUGE at all. It was laid out that if you went upstairs to the bedrooms there was another set of steps to your right to lead up to the master. I don't think it took long to dormer either. I always wished my parents would do this so then I could have the original master with bath like my friend!

Re: split-level homes
I have a split and while mine is not extended, heck, i don't even live in mine yet ;*( BUT there are quite a few in our neighborhood that have extended and put a master suite (i'm assuming) over the kitchen/livingroom/dining room area.
they are building one now around the corner...We are in East Meadow.
the ones that are complete look great...they don't look odd or anything at all.

No, not ridiculous -- but its the only one in the neighborhood so it does look big in comparison. I'm dying to go inside!
One other note, is that my split levels are different from yours... you enter on the ground, so in comparison, it really does look like a fourth level. That probably adds to the bigger look.
