29 kids is...
too many for a first grade class!! My class can't even all fit on the floor where we have meeting/sharing!! I don't know what I am going to do because I also have my smartboard projector set up, which I could move, but it would require all the kids to have to move out of the way everytime I use it!!! Its so crazy, out of all the grade levels in our school, they decide to cut a first grade teacher!!! GRRRR...I can't even imagine how I am going to do reading groups with that many kids!!!

actually, i think 29 kids for first grade may be out of compliance with state regs. is this the "norm" for your school?

Yikes! Are you in a Catholic School?
When I taught K in a Catholic School, I had 27 by myself. And that was crazy. I can't imagine 29 
I agree with some of the OP though, they may not be adhering to state guidelines with numbers like that. Worth looking into...
Good luck, I'm sure you will a great job despite the circumstances

Good luck!!! I teach first too and I have 25 (not that far from you)
I have NO TA just lil ol me...The other first grade classes are 12 and 14 what a joke and I have 25  I guess I should be happy I have a job right?

if you are DOE, i think 29 is over the lower grade cap and u can grieve.

yup in nyc 3rd grade and under is capped at 28
to you - this is my 3rd year with 28 3rd graders. it's a lot

my DH has 30 students and he said he cant even fit them all on his carpet- some bring their chairs around the carpet!!!!
