Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic
Bronx Man Accused of Driving Drunk in Wrong Direction on Taconic State Parkway
YORKTOWN, N.Y. (AP / WCBS 880) -- A Bronx man is acccused of driving drunk in the wrong direction on New York's Taconic State Parkway. State police say the driver was arrested in Yorktown, about 10 miles north of where a wrong way crash killed eight people on the parkway in July. Police received a call late Wednesday that a livery cab was heading north in the southbound lanes. The 44-year-old driver, who was alone, was held on an aggravated DWI charge.
Westchester County officials have been out checking signs that mark the entrance and exit ramps around county highways and parkways.
But, County Executive Andy Spano tells WCBS Reporter Catherine Cioffi there's only so much they can do to keep people from getting on the road the wrong way.
"There doesn't seem to be a draconian solution that we should apply here," said Spano.
He says especially when those drivers are drunk.
"If someone is not in their full capacity for one reason or another, no sign, no activity, is gonna prevent them from doing that," said Spano.
In the July crash, authorities say Diane Schuler was drunk and high [WCBS 880] on marijuana while driving in the wrong direction. She killed herself, her daughter and three young nieces, along with three men in an SUV. Both incidents occurred in Westchester County, just north of New York City.

Re: Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic
Has there ever been a case of someone who is sober driving the wrong way on the Taconic?
Is it really that confusing?
I doubt it, I think it is really about the fact that people are drinking and driving-not the confusion of the entrance ramps to this road.

Re: Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic
What is it with all these drunk drivers this year? It seems as if there have been so many stories like this over the summer.
I'm glad no one was hurt this time.

Re: Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic

Bar ---> this way

Unfortuneatly I agree. I think it's a pipe dream to think we are ever going to stop it completely. Just like we'll never stop rape, murder, terroism, racism, etc. It's just a sad sad fact of life.

Re: Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic
Is the Taconic really that confusing? I've never driven on it.
I think part of the problem is that people truly believe they are "fine" to drive. They can't see or don't want to admit that they may not realize they are impaired. Now that I have kids, seeing irresponsible parents who drink even one drink and then drive really disgust me. I always let DH drink and I don't just so that we don't fight about whether he is OK to drive after a few hours.

Re: Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic
I drive the Taconic all the time (at least 4x a month) to bring my daughter upstate for "daddy weekends" IMHO, yes there are a few entrance/exit ramps that could get confusing, but there are PLENTY of signs (again IMO) that say Do Not Enter and Wrong Way.
I too feel that these people are DRUNK, and they aren't supposed to drive to begin with, but are stupid enough to do so anyway.
Maybe they should install spike strips that pop the tires if you drive the wrong way on the ramp. You won't get too much further with 4 flat tires !!!

I really feel like, despite everything police and people are trying to do, there hasn't been any reduction ion drunk driving cases. It is really too bad!!

Re: Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic
the taconic is a tough road, i personally only take it when its nice and sunny out, never at night or in any inclement weather.....
that said....there are a lot of odd intersections and on/off ramps on that road, but i think there are adequate signs to help you navigate safely...that is if you are not impaired
i cant believe so many people never learn.....
DONT DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!!!!

Re: Another drunk driver driving the wrong way on the Taconic
Drunk Drivers disgust me as well!!!!
But what if to they put those strip things that you drive over that as long as you are going the correct way do no damage but if you were to get on the wrong way they pop your tire.
Again I am NOT condoning Drunk Driving but if the entrances can be confusing them blow out there tires they won't get far!!!!

I dont think there are any cases of sober drivers going the wrong way. However, I could that it happening. I drove on the Taconic for the first time 2 weeks ago and had to get off for gas then get back on. It confused me for a split second. Better signs might be a good idea though.
However, this does NOT justify drunk drivers AT ALL!!
