NYS Education Standards

Hello everyone,
I usually post on the Parenting board, so I am new to this board. Hope all is well!
I am a graduate student at CW Post, in the Speech, Language Pathology program. I have a project due in a few weeks and I have started the research. I am looking for a website that shows the standards for learning in the 5th grade. I googled this and I didn't get anywhere....just wondering if there are any teachers that can forward me some information. I need to specifically know the curriculum for grade 5...what students need to know.

Also, standards are very different from curriculum and you don't really see the standards posted by grade level.

For example, an English/Language Arts standard might go something like this:
"Students will read critically."

This is a broad statement and covers many age ranges. A first grader can read critically as can a senior in high school. it depends on the LEVEL of the material. the standards are deliberately vague so that they apply across all grade levels. they are just general skills we want the kids, wheras the curriculum is the means in which we get there specifically. KWIM?

Curriculum can vary district to district. It varies from classroom to classroom in terms of how in depth a teacher goes with each topic. in my school 5th grade is:

Math: number properties, multiplication, division, factors and multiples, fractions, decimals, geometry, probability

Reading: Varies a lot based on needs of class and skill levels. but essentially reading for understanding, developing comprehension skills such as inferencing, predicting, author's craft, etc. Grammar is a big part too - parts of speech, punctuation rules, etc.

Writing: most teachers tie in writing to what they're covering in reading. Many 5th grade teachers focus on developing well-thought parpagraphs and then students usually can write a well-planned out 3-4 paragraph essay by the end of the year.

Social Studies: US govt (Constitution), industrial revolution, Westward Expansion, slavery, Civil War, Immigration

Science: We are in the midst of changing this completely, but previously we did: Scientific Method, Light, Electromagnetism, DNA/Genetics
