I need help.

I am teaching 7th grade. Since I have special ed, as many of you already know, I have my kids with me all day.

So....... here's where I need help. I need to teach all the core subjects all on a 7th grade level! Granted my kids are mostly on 4th grade levels............. I still need to teach to the curriculum and they still need to prepare for the state exams like everyone else. Now...... here's the thing. I can't do math!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Literally, just CAN NOT DO IT!! .... So, I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for resources for teachers that breaks down hard math concepts.

Last year I had my DH 'tutor' me at night but it was so stressful. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions, or if anyone know of any kind of book out there that I could use.

ELA has always been my talent. I can barely handle a checkbook, it's sad Chat Icon I never thought being so math-stupid would come back to haunt me before MY OWN KIDS are in middle school......... but fortunately then, my DH could help with their hw. My DH obviously can't come in and teach for me!! Chat Icon

Anyone?

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but try looking at this NYS 7th grade math prep site. If you click on the links under the "Content" areas, it gives you tutorial lessons on how to do each skill and also gives practice activities as well. I don't know if it will have everything you need, but it might be a start. Good luck! NYS 7th Grade Math Practice

I don't teach math either. But in ELA, I find it very helpful to go on the NYSED site and print out all the old exams for my grade. So doing that in math might be a good idea too. In fact, since your kids are working at a different level, you could even print exams from lower grade to use for practice and then work your way up to 7th.

Evan-Moor makes great books for daily practive- I have them for vocab and language skills. I know they make them for math too. Also, I have found that Scholastic makes really high quality books of reproducible activities.

Finally- do you have a lead teacher or math coach? They should really be helping you.

ETA- so funny that the StudyZone site is from Oswego- I went to college there! Am going to look at ELA.

Thanks for the advice for looking at the old exams- I'm familiar with the exams since I used them last year, but 7th grade has all new material Chat Icon I will definitely check out those books though, thank you! I really should look into scholastic. I bought a Spectrum Math book for 7th grade but now that I started I see that all of the material in the book is 6th grade!! Which obviously helps for review but won't help with teaching my current lessons!

We do have a math coach....... unfortunately, she is very 'short' mannered, if you know what I mean. She seems to not have much patience for 'slow' math learners like myself. It seems she thinks her only job description is overseeing the curriculum and handing out materials Chat Icon Real shame..... Though, I have recently become friendly with a math teacher on my grade so hopefully she can also become a good resource!

Thanks for your response! You are so lucky you don't have to teach math, it's the worst! That and science are what make me wish I taught elementary!! Middle school math is over my head, I used to be embarrassed to admit that Chat Icon

Re: I need help.

I taught 7th grade MS Special Ed. math last year. If you need anything FM me. I can send you some of my notes. Most of the time I typed up my own or made power points. Now I am teaching 6th grade math. What I find hard is breaking it down step by step.

I don't teach Math...however I teach ELA, Reading, and Social Studies (7th and 8th grades) self contained. Most of my students are on a 3-5 grade level.
