It is comical to think that teachers could change what has been done to children for 5 years before they even enter school.
There are so many issues here:
1. Teacher salary
2. Class size
3. Materials
4. Funding for trips, etc
5. Assessments
6. Air conditioning (can you imagine school down south? or even in NYC during 90+ weather/humidity)
And so many, many more!

I feel like the article was implying that there is a need to extend the day b/c parents aren't doing there job. THere was part saying how the hours after school are "high risk" times for kids. So now it is the responsibility of schools to keep kids out of trouble?
Also, the issue is not more time in school, it is making sure that kids are doing what they are supposed to when they are not in school, i.e homework, reading, studying and taking time to work on school work.
I really feel like they want school to pick up the slack for parents....

as a parent i agree. I hope that they are not serious about extending school. I enjoy my kids and like to do things wth them. Its hard enough during the school year to do stuff with homework, projects and extracircular activities. They spend enough time in school. I know alot of parents work and would love to see someone taking care of their kids but extending school isn't the answer

How about instead of more school time, maybe more PARENTING time? Maybe change maternity leave or have parenting classes? Seriously, you can't change how a kid works. They can only be attentive for so long. There are so many variables and honestly, like any workplace, their little personalities REALLY affect the environment, too. MAking the day or year longer is not the answer. Class size, appropriate curriculum, less testing and parenting by parents, not teachers, is what will work.

My 1st graders are mentally clocked out by 1 oclock. Obama wants more school - where's the $$$ Mr. Pres. So much for that stimulus package!

I think I would have nervous breakdown! It is illogical, and instead they need to revamp teh whole NCLB act which killed education-- now it is just tests and more tests and the kids get less able to do the work each year. I have "dumbed down" my curriculum every year a little more for the past 7 years. Also, it will cost a ton of money that our country doesn't have right now!
