Re: need recs for educational toys for my DS
I got my DS First Word Flash Cards to help him talk. He loved taking them out of the box and putting them back. I used to put a few out and ask for the "cat". When he found the cat, we'd repeat "cat" a few times. Turns out "tractor" was on of his favorite cards and first words.
Borders has them - you can also check out best bargin books. I think Dr. Suess/Cat-in-the-hat and Baby Einsteins have versions too. These were thick cards. Not the multiplication ones I had in school.

DD didn't have a speech delay but she loved those cards -they have them for all different things (moving items - like trains, cars, etc; then there is an animals set etc - so check them all out.) They are touch and feel so they were a little more exciting than the plain flash cards - we would do treasure hunts where I would hide them around the room and she had to find certain cards.

my ped and therapist all have said toys that don't talk. books, puzzles, trains, cars. it encourages sounds.

how about the alphabet blocks? You can spell out words, build towers and knock them down.

I would have thought it was the oposite - DS has a book that makes car noises and he copies them.

try the EI section of superduperinc.com (company that sells speech-lang. supplies...not my favorite for older kids but not bad for the little ones)

Re: need recs for educational toys for my DS
Last year DS was 16 months for Christmas. We got him this train station toy because a friend of his had it and he loved playing with it.
It teaches and pronounces, letters, numbers, shapes, colors, animals. He loves this toy still!!!! I truly believe this is how he learned his letters, numbers and colors so early.
By far the best toy I think we have ever bought him!!!!!!!!!
They may be phasing them out, so not sure how easy they are to get anymore. I know they sell them through Amazon and V-tech.com
It's the v-tech alphabet train station.
