Certification question NYC teachers

Let's say you have a birth-2 cert and there's a grade 5 position a school wants to hire you for are they able to?

Also is it true that you can take additional courses to obtain your 1-6 cert in gen ed and sped ed WITHOUT student teaching?

Certification is not from NYC, it's from NYS. You can be hired and apply for a supplementary certificate while taking classes to get your new license. I think it is good for 3 years.

* Content Core - Childhood Education - 12 S.H.
* Content Specialty Test (CST) - Multi-Subject
* Workshop - Child Abuse Identification
* Workshop - School Violence Intervention and Prevention
* Fingerprint Clearance
* School District Recommendation

* College Coursework - Concepts in Historical and Social Sciences - 6 S.H.
* College Coursework - Scientific Processes - 6 S.H.

* Pedagogical Core
o College Coursework at Student Developmental Level - Childhood - Grades 1-6 - 6 S.H.
o College Coursework - Teaching Literacy Skills Methods - 3 S.H.

* Additional Education - Masters Degree
* Graduate Coursework Content Core - Liberal Arts & Sciences - 12 S.H.

This explains about the supplementary certificate:

Supplementary Certificate
Description Certificate issued to already-certified classroom teachers to enable them to teach in a different subject area where a shortage exists. Candidates for the Supplementary certificate must meet certain semester hour and test prerequisites and have a commitment from the employing school for appropriate support while transitioning to the new subject area.
Validity Valid for three years while completing requirements for the Initial certificate in the new subject area.
