Can I ask a Question?

I hope this doesn't come out wrong.

I see lots of moms on here with kids who has Sensory Processing Disorder but if I'm following threads correctly your kids have been labeled autistic as well?
DD and DS both have sensory issues and I believe it is genetic because my husband, although highly functioning has them. But no mention of autism or being on the spectrum has come up.

Do one mean the other or can you have sensory but not be autistic.

Re: Can I ask a Question?

DS' therapists "think" DS has sensory "issues" (not sure if thats the correct word)...
They doubt he is autistic, but, they're not dr.s and can't give a diagnosis.
There are moments when we (therapists and I) are like "OK, Yeah, he *may* be on the spectrum" and then other moments we are like ""Hmmm OK maybe not"...
To get a more "definite" answer we are going to a developmental ped. next month!
DS is right smack in the middle. He's a "Question Mark"...Hoping the dr. will give us more info and be able to help us out even more.

Re: Can I ask a Question?

DS is autistic AND has sensory issues.

You don't have to be autistic to have sensory issues. But most kids who are on the spectrum do have sensory issues.

Also not all kid on the spectrum are "autistic". Some are PDD-NOS, have Asperger's disease, etc..

It does get confusing when you are refering to what is call what. I was told PDD IS autism and you have subcategories. Then I was told PDD IS the spectrum and austims is part of 5 "syndroms" composing the spectrum.

My DD is the same way. She has sensory issues and emotional issues as well but because of this she does poorly on the tests they give her. So "technically" she fell on the autistic spectrum but no one really thinks she is. But with that being said, if she wasn't on the spectrum she wouldn't be getting all the services she gets now and she definately needs them.
