I am just so sad

As some of you might know, my family moved from LI to CT last month. I love it here, my children are very happy in their daycare, I love my job, and I am joining a meetup group to make mommy friends. The thing is, my parents were here this weekend, they came up from LI Friday night and just left about 30 min. ago. We had a GREAT day together yestetday! We took the kids to a local orchard where they were having a Halloween Festival. I wasn't going to take them Trick or Treating (they are 17 months and 5 months), but my mom insisted, so we went. We had such a GREAT time, my mother was crying as she left. I know I am lucky that we are only 2 hours away from them, and they are going to try to come one weekend a month, and we will hopefully get back to LI once every other month, but it just isn't the same. My parents enjoy them SO MUCH, and it breaks my mom's heart that they are not a part of her everyday life anymore. I know I am very lucky and that some people don't have mothers, or they are not in driving distance from them. I don't know the point of this post, maybe I am just having a pity party but DS is sitting here crying "ma-ma" and I am sitting here tearing up, and I just hate this. Ok, vent over.

As a grandma ...I can relate.

I'm glad you had a nice time and before you know it they will be back visiting or you will be here.

It must be very hard to be away from your parents. My grandparents lived half way across the country and I can tell you that I am still very close to my grandma because we wanted to be close. The times we saw each other when I was a child were so special and we enjoyed every second we had together. Now, that she is 90, I cherish the times we had together so much... and all the long phone conversations. Although it must feel so sad right now, it seems like you are a very close family and distance won't change that! Hang in there!

DH and i have talked about moving out of state because house prices are just so expensive here and we're not sure if we'll be able to afford it when we want to have a second child. When I think about moving away, it feels like my heart is being ripped out so I only imagine how it feels if we actually moved. I'm sorry that you have to go through this. It is good that you live so close and you can definitely foster that grandchild/grandparent bond.

My parents try to see DS every other weekend whether it's a day trip up here or us going down for the weekend. We also talk on Skype b/c my parents want to see DS as much as possible. I hope things get easier for you.

We are in CT too. DH is from LI (West Hempstead) and his family still lives there. My mom lives in Southern CT. We are definitely going through the same thing and it is so hard! We talk on Skype with our parents too! Where in CT are you?

DH's parents live about 2hrs from us and have no intention of EVER moving from their house, so DH gets really emotional. It's so hard when grandchildren are born. We just try to appreciate the time that we have when we all visit.

I can relate...I am around 2.5 hours from my family too. I live in central CT and I love it here and would never move back to LI...but I really wish my family would move here. It's hard...

We are also in your situation, so I can def relate! We moved to CT from LI for DH's job about 3 years ago and just had our DS about 2 months ago and we really miss having family around as well.. I hve often gotten the same sad feeling you described when my mom comes to visit and leaves. I am near the New Haven area, so FM me if you ever want to meet up or chat. You are not alone, it is hard and I feel lucky it's only 2 hours, but it's still so hard!

This is my first post on the parenting boards - I'm very much a lurker on this site. But I wanted to post because I'm a LI transplant, too. Living in Westport. Although I love it here and have no desire to go back to LI, we really don't know too many people yet and it can get kind of lonely. My entire family lives on LI and really doesn't venture here much. They call Westchester "upstate" so CT is like a whole 'nother country!

I'd love to get together or just talk with other CT mamas! DD is 3 months old and we've not really ventured out too much yet (we had a very rough first 2 months). But I'm starting to feel up for the task.

If nothing else, I wanted to join the other posters in saying you're not alone!
